Hi all,

Remember what the South suburbs/ South Minneapolis were like in the early 70's?

Here's a few starters:
Bloomington Penn Ave & 494 - Montgomery Wards was the anchor store by the Mann Theatre
Lincoln HS at 90th and Penn was still graduating students
Nora's drive in by Lake Calhoun still had the best onion rings and strawberry pie
Uptown apartments were still dirt cheap. I lived in a 3-story brown brick walk-up at 35th and Dupont and only paid about $300 per month in rent
Sir Winstons restaurant in Uptown was a great place for coffee.
Uptown Schlamps women's wear store was ~~the~~ place for the Edina ladies to shop
Lake Harriet bandstand was old and run-down even then!

What do you remember and do you still live in the Minneapolis area?

Uptown...abandoned grain silos, railroad tracks, work opportunity center (WOC), Bryant Lake Bowl when it used to just be a crappy bowling alley, Smokey's Pool Hall (Great place to score low grade narcotics or get stabbed), Little Tin Soldier, Port Arthur's, Calhoun Elementary School (Where Calhoun Square sits today), Uptown Bowl (In the 70's 10 year olds go go into bars unattended & play video games), biker gangs, picking the glass out of my knees after football practice @ Bryant Square Park (it was all dirt then, no grass), Sherman's on 32nd/Bryant, Morris & Christy's on 31st/Hennepin, the Wax Museum on Lake/Grand....

Where was the Camelot?

Remember going to Met Stadium as a kid and seeing the Brewers play the Twins. Though for sure Hank was going to hit a home run. No suck luck.

And lost a lot of my hearing at the Met Center courtesy of many metal shows.

NE Corner of 494 and Hwy 100 (Normandale Blvd). That was considered the place for fine dining during the 60s and 70s, it stayed open until 1988 as places like The Rusty Scupper & Stonewings became the places to be. Building is actually still there and houses the Griffin Gallery featuring Bill Mack.

There we go...this pic sort of encapsulates Uptown circa 1980 to me. NE Mpls in 2011 reminds me a lot of Uptown back then.

Awesome picture. These kind of hangouts between friends just don't happen as much anymore.
