We have a 3 hour and forty five minute layover at the airport on a Sunday afternoon in February. We're a family of 5, kids are 8-15 yrs old. Any suggestions of anything we can do in or near the airport to kill some time? Restaurants, attractions, etc?

put your luggage in a locker and go over to the Mall of America for a few hours.

I agree, take the light rail over to the Mall of America. I would just make sure you stay on top of flights, etc. Feb in MN could mean some delays, etc. The airport itself has quite a few shops, etc. as well.

I'm actually sort of surprised people leave airports during 3-4 hour layovers. That never occurs to me at all, as I'd be afraid that I'd underestimate transit time and security time and wind up missing a flight.

Although, with close and reliable access to the MOA, Minneapolis is probably one of the better places to do it.

The lockers @ MSP allow you to leave all your stuff inside the secure area. Making it real easy/fast to get back thru security. The light Rail train run about every 15-20? mins and its a few min ride to the mall. Just keep a eye on the time to ensure you are back in time for your flight. 3:45 Layover sould allow about 2:30 total time going to/from & at the mall. (not alot of time but gives your about 90 min or so @ the mall)

If you have to do something, and I completely understand why you might, then MOA is it. Skip the stores and ride the rides. Go for an hour, though. It took me 45 minutes to get through security last week, and it was not exactly peak time.

As busy as the MSP airport is, I'm not sure I would leave...but then again it can all depend on timing. If you really want to leave then, yea, go to MOA, but if you stay there are plenty of shops and restaurants to hang out at.

I would just be worried about transit and security time, but that's just me.

One thing that will save you time is there is a security check-in (If you don't have any Checked Baggage) very close to the LRT station. It's not well-marked, but if you walk from the LRT station to the place where the shuttle-trains to the main terminal are (in the middle of the concourse connecter (see map below), there will be a stairway (or escalator) going up one level. This is where the other security access is--the line is usually much shorter and you don't need to deal with the airport tram to the main terminal.

I'd agree with the other posters. MOA is your only option, just watch your time.
