Are there any nonwhite newscasters on the Minneapolis-St. Paul stations? I don't often watch the local news here, but from what I've seen, I haven't noticed anyone who is not white on there. This strikes me as odd for a large city like Minneapolis, although I suppose it is one of the whitest big cities in the country.

I usually just watch Channel 4 which is white (although Amelia is half Japanese). But we used to have Robyn Robinson who anchored the Channel 9 news for a long time, until she resigned to work on her jewelry business. She was a great anchor!! I still remember her as being a great advocate for the arts community by promoting a variety of things going on in "The Buzz" segment.

I think your question is very valid though. As shown below, it has been asked before:

Fox 9 has a female in early morning news and Danny Glover (I think his name is) for night time field reporter. Kare 11 has one female in early morning news and WCCO 4 has one male field reporter for evening news. There were also three beautiful looking female anchors who no longer are on air. The one at KSTP 5 was harrased by Joe Schmidt until she left and then he took her spot and don't know what happened he left the station and now he's back to the station doing the same old gig, sport reporter. I think it's a cut-throat industry, they are always picking on each other... WCCO is much more decent and tasteful though.

I have no idea if this is the case or not as I don't really watch the local news much. However, say it is true....What if the best reporters have been chosen and they just happen to all be white? Could that possibly be the case and nothing to do with race or it being the "whitest" area as you put it??? If I made a comment like that about a high population African-American area calling it the "blackest", I would be accused of being a racist.

I remember Robyn Robinson! I watched her in the 90s into the 00s. She was great.

I agree, for the most part. I also think the thread was made more to make notice about our supposedly "overly white" population than anything else.

How hard is it to be a local newscaster? Based on what I've seen, not very. Anybody who is mildly good looking and charismatic can be on the local news, as the only skill it really takes is reading from a teleprompter. Why wouldn't the news companies make an effort to hire a diverse group of people to reflect the society that they are presenting the news to. If only one group is represented in an organization, that makes the organization biased towards the interests and lifestyle of that group, especially in a public format like TV news.

Maybe it's like golf. Looks pretty easy until you try it.

Angela Davis is the morning and midday anchor at WCCO. As far as I know, she is the only African-American anchor in the market. I believe Amelia Santaniello is Filipina by heritage.

At KSTP, weekend anchor, Joy Lin Nakrim is half-Chinese; and morning anchor, Vineeta Sawkar is East Indian.

Local television news tends to be very market-specific. Stations in cities with large black populations will seek-out anchors that reflect that demographic. The same is true for cities with significant Latino or Asian populations. The MSP television market is still very "white" when compared to most markets of similar size.
