If I were to Google street view some cool parts of town (either commercial or residential) to get "the feel" of Minneapolis without visiting, where are some starting points?

You could start at Nicollet Mall and 4th St. and work your way south. Hennepin Avenue through downtown. The Hennepin and Lake area (Uptown). Those are all commercial nodes. Hennepin on the other side of the river from downtown is nice too.

Residential areas are going to be trickier. They range from slummy to extravagant. It sort of depends on what budget you're looking for. Overall, most of it is nice housing, ranging from buildings over 100 years old to lots of post-war bungalows to some of the most amazing houses along the Chain of Lakes.

There are lots of nice, but small commercial nodes scattered throughout the city.

Here's a few examples off the top of my head:

SW Mpls: 50th & France, 50th & Xerxes, 50th & Penn, 50th & Bryant, 54th & Nicollet, 46th & Nicollet, 46th & Grand, 46th & Bryant, 43rd & Upton, 44th & France, Lyndale & Lake (Lyn-Lake area), 26th & Lyndale, Lyndale & Franklin

South Mpls: 48th & Chicago, Chicago & Lake, 46th & Bloomington, 11th & Franklin, Franklin & 23rd Avenue, E 27th & Lake

NE Mpls: 13th Ave & University Avenue NE

For residential areas, you might try going east to west at 10 block intervals... eg. try 22nd Street, 32nd Street, 42nd Street, 52nd Street etc... and you'll get a good impression of how the city's residential architecture changes. Please bear in mind however, that most homes are oriented to North - South Streets
