As we experience our first snowfall of the season today here in Minnesota (my family's first in this state), I was interested in hearing your most memorable stories of snow you have witnessed in the Twin Cities area...

I seem to recall a snowfall around Halloween once that one or two might recall...

Blizzard of '77. We had a BLAST in the snow, sledding, making snowmen, etc.

After that it would have been the back to back 20+" snowfalls (one was 22" the next 24") in 1982 or 1983? The storms hit on Tuesday and then Thursday (something like that). I remember all of the snow piled along driveways from shoveling and getting out of school early one day, snow day the next, going back to school to get out early and a snow day the next day. Make for a quick week of school.

Definitely the halloween blizzard in 91. A stray cat had broken into my house a couple days before. He was in bad shape so I took him to the vet for surgery. They called me the day after halloween to say he could come home. I shoveled two ruts in the 30 inches of snow in my driveway so I could go get him. DH was out of town and miraculously got in on one of the few flights that landed that day. It was very exciting!!

I remember a March (or was it April) snow over a day or two in which it snowed something like 2 feet, no it was more like 3 feet. No wait it was in January, I think back in the 60's or early 70's. No wait, those were tornadoes... and it was May.

I also remember listening to WCCO while still in bed waiting to hear if school was canceled. The news/school closings always came on after the "Northwest Orient (gong) Airlines" commercials.

I have to go with '91 Halloween Blizzard. I remember taking my daughter trick or treating and my front wheel drive car getting stuck in the middle of the street one hour after it started snowing, it was snowing that hard.

Halloween Blizzard '91. I went to the 400 Bar & saw "Beat the Clock" (anyone remember them?) play. Met a girl & ended up going back to her place. In the morning I woke up with a terrific hangover & let's just say, neither of us were interested in having breakfast & chatting. I told her goodbye & walked out the front door...and I was thigh-high in snow. I was wearing a light jacket, no gloves, jeans & tennis shoes. I had to walk 3-4 blocks (in that snow it was brutal!) to get to Franklin Ave & wait for the bus. Mercifully one came eventually, but It got stuck twice going up Franklin Ave & a few of us had to get out and push the bus. I finally arrived at Lyndale Ave. literally hours later, one hung-over & weary traveler.

Halloween Blizzard for me, too. We walked up to McDonald's and then Calhoun Square in Uptown, then hit the neighborhood for some snowy trick-or-treating. Best snowstorm ever. I've experienced a lot of other Twin Cities snowfalls, but that's one of the only ones that actually stands out. The rest just blur together as random snow memories. The Halloween Blizzard was special for its blend of huge snowfall plus its timing -- no way to forget that one!
