Hi Guys.. I always get help here so I need some more! I have family coming into town (in their late 60s/early 70s) from the south. Looking for not only some typical Twin Cities things to do but more importantly holiday-specific events. Also needing to entertain two children under 6. We are in Woodbury, willing to travel a little (would prefer not to trek all the way to Maple Grove area), and they are coming the 21st-30th of December. All the events here in Woodbury seem to be ending next week.

I will be taking them to the mall of america, and probably the aquarium there as well, Holidazzle will be over and I don't think they'd be interested in Macys. Nothing too active like skating..they have some health problems.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Are you sure they wouldn't be interested in the Macy's show? That's the top "classic" Minneapolis (can't speak for the St. Paul traditions) holiday event. You could always do a walk-through, then head to the Oak Grill for lunch or dinner. It works for both adults and for kids (was part of my Christmas tradition every year when I was a kid, and it hasn't changed much!). Downstairs (in the old J.B. Hudson's space) is what the Macy's lady told me was the largest Macy's Christmas ornament department between Chicago and the west coast.

Also downtown, the IDS's Crystal Court has lunchtime music performances scheduled every day. Not sure when they stop, but assume they have the schedule online. My son (age 4) was VERY impressed with the huge tree. And not Christmas-related (but easy and fun if you're already downtown) Wells Fargo has a nice free museum on the skyway level; they do a good job, and the kids (and adults) can "ride" in a replica WF stagecoach. Also not seasonal but worth the visit if you do end up downtown, the Foshay Tower observatory is always worth

Haven't made it there yet this year, but the Minneapolis Institute of Arts decorates their period room for the holidays. Or, even better, swing past the American Swedish Institute. AMAZING building, looks its very best at Christmas (they go all-out with an annual "Nordic" Christmas exhibit), and they're pretty kid-friendly. (great gift shop, too.) Check the event schedule, too, as they often have special events around this time of year (music, storytimes for the kids, etc.)

The Pioneer Press just had a story about the Christmas Light Tours you can take (limo tours but you can drive on your own too). It looks like the best places to go this year are in Inver Grove Heights and South St. Paul so very close to you. It might be too late but what about tickets to a play at the Guthrie (Christmas Carol) or the Ordway (Sister's Christmas Catechism--sounds very funny!)?
