My husband and I are having the hardest time finding an apartment in the west suburbs. He works in Minnetonka, so we are trying to find something that isn't a really long commute (looking at Golden Valley, Plymouth, Hopkins, St. Louis Park, Minnetonka, Edina, Eden Prairie, Richfield). We currently live right on the border between Richfield and Minneapolis, but don't want to stay in this exact neighborhood. We don't mind Richfield, but can't find much for quality rentals there.

We are trying to save up to buy a house in the next couple years and don't want a huge rent payment that is as much as a small house's mortgage. We would like to stay under $900 for:
-Two bedrooms (or room for an office space in a one bedroom)
-Dog-friendly (we really want to get a small dog like a Westie since we are putting off our dream of buying a house and are waiting to have children until we can buy a house)
-Safe
-Decent management
-Maybe a perk or two (washer/dryer in unit, fitness center, pool, walking paths - not necessary but would be wonderful if it had one of these things)

All of the decently priced apartments seem to have horrible problems (unsafe, mice, falling apart, etc.).

Any suggestions?

I suspect some compromise in your near future, sorry to say. If the rental you described actually existed, I'd already live there

I can't speak for all those suburbs, but I recently moved to MN and Plymouth was on my short list. Short of a miracle, to get everything on your wish list there will run you $1100 easy.

Also keep in mind that most apts (nice ones, anyway) charge a pet fee AND pet rent, on top of your regular rent. Not sure how tight your budget is but the Westie will cost you a few hundred more a year.

I agree-your price range is just too low for what you want. The pet is a big part of that. Most places are going to ask for a higher deposit and probably more in rent for pets because no matter how well trained your pet is, they do add to the wear and tear on a house/apartment.

You are going to have to move further out if you want to get everything you are asking for.

I figured we'd have to compromise on something - probably the dog. Just thought I'd see if there were any places people knew about that weren't on the main websites.

Thanks for the help!

Sometimes you can get lucky driving around a neighborhood and spotting a sign, but that is pretty hit or miss. Some of the local newspaper, Sun, etc. often have local rentals you don't see elsewhere.
