My husband and I are in town looking for a single family home to rent starting May 1st. We are hoping for something in Edina, Linden Hills and Eden prairie. We own a home in Atlanta and as owners we are very responsible renters. We have been looking at places all day and coming up empty. Here is our wish list: 3-4 bedroom, garage, very safe neighborhood near parks, fenced yard, no more than $1600. Our move here will be between 1-2 years. Were thinking our prime situation would be to rent a house that isn't selling to help cover the mortgage. Does anyone know of anything in your neighborhood with a for rent sign? Maybe your house isn't selling and your thinking about renting it out. Please let us know ASAP! Any help would be greatly appreciated and we go home tomorrow afternoon

Most likely you are coming up empty because your price range is too low for what you are looking for in those areas. You are going to have to add close to $1000/month to get a house that size in a neighborhood you want in those areas of the cities.

I would suggest giving a real estate agent in that area a call and ask them if they have something like that. I know of several agents but none of them work in that area or I would give you their names. Most of their listings are going to be south metro.

I don't always agree with Golfgal's assessment of cost of living in our metro area, but I think she is generally on the mark in this instance. I did a quick search on a local real estate site for rentals in the areas you are looking, 3BRS and rent $0-2000. Last night, one listing came up at $1550 and one at $1995. The $1550 is already no longer listed. I think you will need to adjust one or more of your search criteria.
