Does anyone have any experience with the Catholic K-8 schools in either Minneapolis or St. Paul? My husband is interviewing for a job that would put us in the area next summer. Public school seems to be the most common choice so I'm not finding a lot of info on Catholic schools when searching the forum. I have seen the reviews on greatschools but not many are from the last year or two. Obviously we'd be visiting before settling on a school. I was just hoping someone on the board could provide some perspective, especially where curriculum and community environment are concerned. TIA!

Yeah, I went to Catholic Schools in the MSP area from '93 - '02.

Which schools are you looking at? I can try to give you some feedback.

We're looking at Carondelet, Holy Spirit, Highland, St. Mark's, and St Thomas More.

You might consider adding Annuciation, Our Lady of Peace, and St. Helena to your list. I personally prefer the part of south Minneapolis that's east of Lake Harriet to the area west of it.

Thanks Glenfield. I hadn't looked on the SE side, but these look like promising options worth considering.

For what it's worth, our neighbors LOVE Annunciation. From what they say (and from our visits to public school-sponsored events) it seems like a group of great kids and friendly, involved parents. (I'm sure that's true of most of these schools, but thought I'd throw it out there anyway!)

You're welcome. One thing on the terminology: the area east of 35W is referred to as south Minneapolis. SE is the part of the city that's east of the Mississippi by the U. I know... it's confusing.

I know several people at both Our Lady of Grace (OLG) and Annunciation--they all love their schools.

In my neighborhood (Highland Park), more kids go to Highland Catholic than to the neighborhood public grade school. Others go to St. Mark's and Nativity. All of those schools have strong family involvement. I am going to guess that St Paul as a whole has a much greater ratio of kids in Catholic schools vs. public schools than most other cities in the Midwest. Part of this is testament to the large Catholci poulation in the city.

PS: Where is Carondelet? Not familiar with that school.
