Unique thrift store. I had up to size nine months before my son was born, he's a fall baby and he was in a size 18 months by spring. All thrift stores have baby clothes but there it's easy to get everything you need in a trip at Unique because they have so much. Go on Tuesdays and it's 25% off. They occasionally have 50% off days too.

Otherwise, I agree with Camden. Garage sales. We got as much as we could there. We saved a fortune on baby stuff. If you're worried about recalls you can check online. Being pregnant is actually what got me started on my love for garage sales. Fall is a good time to load up for the winter too. So many sales have baby stuff you can probably get everything you want in a few hours if you use Craigslist to find them.

Pacifier. I would also check out 50th and France. My children are no longer at a cute clothes stage so I dont know many off hand. There is also Hanna andersson and Jack and Jill (both at MOA)

All the local, new, non-chain places that I know of are upscale, but you can still potentially find good sales if you go at the right time. Then again, I am used to garage sale prices, so everything full price seems expensive! Pacifier is nice -- not expensive in the world of baby stores, but a lot more than Target or Old Navy. Think like $20 for a onesie.

One chain that you didn't mention is Carter's -- you probably know that one already, but just in case, there's a Carter's store at Southtown that has good sales. Kohl's has good deals if you only shop the sales.

Bellies to Babies (66th and Penn) is another second-hand store to check out, if you haven't already. It sells only maternity and baby/toddler clothes. I haven't been there since they expanded, but FWIW, last time I was there I liked it better than Once Upon A Child -- seemed easier to navigate. If you have outgrown clothes, or maternity clothing no longer needed, they also buy it on the spot (not consignment).
