Hello everyone,

I will be at an internship in downtown Minneapolis from January to the end of April. Does anybody know of apartments that are

1) close or within twenty minutes commute to downtown Minneapolis. I know some suburbs have express busses running downtown and there is also the light rail. I'm not opposed to living downtown but the rents are more expensive. I don't want to drive everyday so access to public transportation that can get me downtown quick is a must.

2) Rent between $400-850 (pretty big price range) for one bedroom or studio apartment. I don't want to spend a lot but convenience will outweigh cost since this is only for a few months and I'm not in the mood to screw around with long commutes or hassles until I learn the city.

3) Can do partial-year leases.

Does anybody know of any options that fit my criteria and will:
-1) identify cities/suburbs/areas to look (this is probably easier to help with)
-2) This is more difficult but if you are aware of specific apartments I should look at

Options I have thought of:
-Downtown Minneapolis - convenient but expensive
-St. Louis Park - it looks like there are express busses downtown, its close, and rent more reasonable
-along light rail near Minneapolis - Are these areas safe though?
-University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

I appreciate the help.

I think you'll be hard-pressed to find many short-term leases unless you're negotiating them with individual landlords. Your best bet is to find a sublease.

Of your options:

Downtown Minneapolis: I think rents for most decent places with be outside your range. Some condo owners might be renting theirs though.

St. Louis Park: Definitely quieter since it's suburban in nature. You'll be driving more often than a place like downtown, but there are both express buses and some regular buses that run through to downtown.

Along Light Rail (Hiawatha Line): The stations tend to be in fairly decent neighborhoods. A few of the areas have higher-than-average crime, but I can't imagine anything south of Lake Street Station sees much crime. Even north of there you can find nice neighborhoods (especially east of the line).

University of Minnesota: You'll probably find a lot subleases here. Additionally, it's very well-served by transit. I don't know how old you are or if university neighborhoods are you type, but there is quite a range. I myself live in a university neighborhood but love it. I'm far enough away that it's quiet, but still have a lot of amenities.

Another option is to look at other places in Minneapolis. You didn't really mention any of these, but there are a lot of great neighborhoods in the city that you didn't mention. Depending on what you want in a neighborhood, there could be several that fit. Do you want a place that has walkable access to a lot of amenities? Do you want bus routes for more than your daily commute or will you be driving a decent amount? How do you define a safe neighborhood? Answering some of these questions might help!

If you haven't found an apartment, try calling Loring Park Apartments in downtown. They were offering me great rate on a 6 month lease for a 2 BD.

Good luck!

How safe is the area on East Franklin Avenue just east of the light rail line and Minnehaha Avenue until the Mississippi River? There are a few apartments in this area I am looking at.

Try a phone calling campaign. I called various apartment buildings that had supposed iron-clad year leases, explaining my nephews need for a short term month by month housing while his house was being built. I had several acquiesce and offer him month to month.

The area you're referring to is Seward. It's a fairly safe area. It's got a bit of a granola vibe mixed with a lot of immigrants. If you were close enough to the Franklin Ave light rail station, you could take the train into work every day. Would definitely beat the hassle of driving.
