Now it's 2016- anything change for St Paul bedroom communities, no more than an hour out. Think small (less than 15k) progressive, hippies and hillbillies coexisting (Nederland Co)...food coops seem to be a good common denominator

Northfield - slightly larger than 15K people, but has a food coop.
Cannon Falls - very fast to St. Paul via highway 52, has a nice winery and a river
bayport/stillwater
Hastings - kind of run down, but also charming in it's own way

I'll even through in a curve ball.......many parts of Inver Grove Heights are rural, with very large lots, horse farms, and lots of woods. It obviously very close to St. Paul

Hastings is 'run down'....

I would wholeheartedly disagree with that statement.

I recently drove through downtown Carver, and it looked like a small town Minnesota. Not sure if this qualifies as rural.
