According to EPA's map, the two biggest sources of GHG in Minneapolis are the garbage incinerator and the U of M. The incinerator belches out more than twice of No. 2. 341 thousand metric tons. The private operator is pushing to burn even more. And not necessarily local garbage. They can burn someone else's if given permission. Thereby making money while polluting Minneapolis. I'd like to think our city government and Hennepin County would resist, but recent history of their dealing with private businesses at the public expense gives me no confidence. Both are full of politicians who think their constituents are a lower priority than more business.

Does the incinerator use emission capturing technologies? Because if they want to burn other peoples trash in my neighborhood they better come up with some

They may. But the net emissions are as given. Far and away worse than any other. And they want to import garbage from outside Hennepin County and burn that too!! Lunatics!

Landfills were a much better idea than incinerators.

It is crazy, though its also crazy how we as a society waste so much in excess. Every single item we throw away can be recycled (including organics.)

Well, I'm thinking that's possibly true. I'm facing a year in which I'm dedicated to a visible reduction of clutter in my garage. I've already talked to Hennepin County about the miscellaneous rubble that doesn't fit in a recyle or reuse category. I have stuff stored in tubs that NO second hand store is going to bother with. I could post a laundry list on Freemarket, but even that is only going to clean up really useful stuff. I did a big move a while back by going through all the office supply items and taking everything not used in a month or two to Friends School in St Paul. The working pens, pencils, pads, tape, staples and so on were gladly received there. If you have a school you favor, you could be an angel for them by saving them from spending money on stuff you can't use. Of course there are the paints, the chemicals and the fluorescent bulbs that the counties are set up to safely handle. One little problem I have is with heavy stuff I'd give away except I am reluctant to allow any complete stranger inside my house. Those who have infinite trust are welcome to give tours to people off the Free Market or Craigslist. But at least the latter is know to have criminals scouting it for opportunities, so a word to the wise.

Yes, absolutely we WASTE outrageous quantities of material goods. My pet idea is to load ships with all of it, and let people who can afford NO goods, even those made in Asian sweatshops, to simply TAKE whatever they want. Why make the poor climb all over germy dumps when you could let them do the same thing in a comparatively clean ship or warehouse. But that's really castles in the air. So easy to imagine, so nearly impossible to make happen (even though the list of billionaires grows every year).

It would be good for the counties and nonprofits to sponsor education of all the ways SHORT of putting it out for garbage pickup that unneeded items can be redistributed. I wonder if I could just collecxt all my stuff in a ministorage and run shopping hours every few days. Frankly, the cost would be worth it to me! Really, not BSing here. Or if my county or the other urban counties would just buy a large warehouse and have receiving hours, letting people come in and stock their giveaways in rational order. I suppose just another lamebrained idea!

They could certainly devise an effective system to collect and distribute items. Of course you know what happens when politicians get to devising thing...

And I wonder why U of M is up there is it just because the campus is so massive?

They focus poorly on all sorts of issues. Building more buildings and hiring more administrative staff seems to be their forte.

EPA - Redirecting to Secure Server

It is an interactive map. You have to do some clicking to get to the level where you can get the emission totals displayed.
I clicked the link given. I saw 46 on Minneapolis. So you start by clicking that number and continue with appropriate clicks.
