It's Official!

My husband has accepted the job with Target and we are making our plans to move to MSP in about 5 weeks. We have to "do the drill" on this end of things - finish school, empty the house, figure out how to transport two cats, one 75 pound dog and two 8 year old boys, a house full of stuff and ma and pa 1200 miles to a new town, put the house on the market and find a soft place to land.

At the many suggestions of folks on this forum (thank you!), we've refocused our eventual home search away from the more rural community of Forest Lake and broadened it to include both Edina and SW MSP and Mahtomedi, each for the great schools - and let go of our focus on continuing the boys in public (or private) Montessori. Again, thank you to all of you who have read my posts and responded with generous spirits. Thanks also to those of you who have sent your private notes of encouragement concerning my depression. Despite all the excitement and tasks ahead of us, I am in AZ this week getting a week of out-patient intensive treatment, hoping that doing so will be just the right thing to get me moving in the right direction as we embark on the next step of our journey.

But, I digress.

The first task at hand is to find a short term rental - perhaps 3-6 months, which will accommodate our family, pets included. We are open to all options and suggestions and have been looking at VRBO, corporate housing sites, etc. Since it is a short term situation, we are open to a longer commute, and would strongly prefer a furnished place, as the thought of unpacking and packing up again in a few months is loathsome.

Since it's summer time, we'd even be open to a recreational location that would accept us and our pets. We have every reason to believe our home in Virginia will sell very quickly and that we will be able to purchase something permanent in a few short months.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I think VRBO is going to be your best option. Finding rental homes that will accept large dogs is going to be very difficult. Most apartments are going to be out as well. I would contact some real estate agents in the north metro and see if they can help with a short term rental.

Keep in mind that Edina is a very expensive place to live....

Just to state the obvious, are you talking to Target's HR about the move yet? I would guess that with their size, and assuming your husband's position is on the professional track, that they have relocation specialists that could help you with lots of the logistics issues.

When we moved here, my wife's company had contacts for realtors, movers, etc.

Definitely talk to Target. I am pretty sure they do have relocation specialists. I know they help with recent college grads to find apartments or whatever, so they must have something for more established families.

Most realtors have access to information about short term rentals as well as long term housing rentals. I'd be happy to see if I can be of assistance if you don't have success with the above great suggestions. And congrats!
