The Star Tribune recently released an article about the latest demographic statistics from the Census through 2012. It said that the Asian community was the fastest-growing segment of the population from 2011 to 2012, adding 7,500 people year over year (YOY), a 3.4% increase. In addition, the Black-alone population grew 2.7%, and the Hispanic population grew 2.4%. The White-only population grew only 0.25% YOY. The rough statistics by major racial segment are as follows:

White-alone: 4,5M
Black-alone: 300K
Non-White Hispanic: 265K
Asian-alone: 235K

I remember seeing a projection of 350K black and Hispanic popuation in the metro area/state by 2015....I wonder if things have slowed down some or if the data is off. Either way, although the growth in the non-white population is remarkable (and faster than the U.S. average), Minnesota is still VERY much behind most U.S. states in terms of being racially integrated.

Wow a very white city indeed. Can't imagine being in a city with only .05% Hispanics and .57% black-alone. I'd have culture shock all over again if I moved back. I think the cold is a big deterrent for at least Hispanic's.

First, those are the demographics for the entire state.

Second, your math is off by a lot. Of the 5.3 million people in the state, 300,000 black is 5.7%, 265,000 Hispanic is 5%, and 235,000 Asian is 4.4%.

Most of those people are in the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, which have a combined population of 670,000 people, so the percentages in the cities are quite different than the state overall, and certainly no where near 5/100ths of one percent.

In Minneapolis, the racial composition is as follows:
White:70.2%
Black or African American: 17.4%
American Indian: 1.7%
Asian: 4.9%
Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander: 0.0%
Some other race: 2.8%
Two or more races: 3.0%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race): 9.2%

(US Census data)

St. Paul:

White: 66.7% (Non-Hispanic Whites: 61.6%)
Black or African American: 13.5%
American Indian or Alaska Native: 0.8%
Asian: 12.4%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: 0.0%
Some other race: 2.9%
Two or more races: 3.7%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race): 8.9%

The largest Asian ancestries in St. Paul are as follows:
"Other Asian": 10.1% (mostly Hmong)
Asian Indian: 0.6%
Korean: 0.6%
Vietnamese: 0.6%
Chinese: 0.3%
Filipino: 0.1%
Japanese: 0.1%

(According to the 2006-2008 American Community Survey)

I gotta laugh. Newspapers and magazines waving a red cape called "nonwhite majority" and expecting people to tremble. Trouble is, the projecxtion is so far out, no reliable prediction can be made as to what changes might occur to throw it off. It is obvious they just want to spark controversy. They want to shake up people with paranoid tendencies. Reminds me of the social scientist a few decades back which said Japan would become bigger than any other nation economically. Except Japan stagnated in the 90's, and it isn't even second anymore. Now the same type of people assure us CHINA will surpass the USA. But again the flaw in their logic is huge. China has only grown as large as it is today because of the good credit of consuming countries. That credit is now so extended, it seems impossible for THEM to grow at all. And it now means China has to shift to a consumer-driven economy. But guess what, making that transition is causing them to stagnate. Anyway back to ethnic ratios. Don't believe anyone who claims they know what the ratios are in 2030. They don't. They are just publishing dreams. Bad ones, maybe. But just dreams.

From what I read, meat packing in this country is virtually all done by Hispanics. But the packing plants are not in big cities. So there can be more Hispanics than a focus on big metros would make you think.

Worthington probably has the highest percentage of Hispanics in MN. I think they are close to, if not over, half their population being Hispanic now.

Willmar is an odd community. I know back in the 80's when the Hispanic population really stared to grow there, they had a LOT of issues. Back in the 40's or so, the KKK was very active in Willmar and things have not changed all that much since then....
