I consider myself a "Liberal". I'm in favor of legalizing marijuana, free speech, privacy, due process, peace (i.e. staying out of wars), helping our citizens who need help, supporting Mom & Pop instead of corporate interests, keeping good jobs home for our workers & defending the Constitution so we keep all these great things going. A liberal in the Ralph Nader/Paul Wellstone mold.

The Progressives I meet in the Twin Cities generally tend to support the surveillance state, indefinite detentions, drone strikes, secret kill lists, war/military interventions (any/all if launched by a Democrat), exporting US jobs (read: Globalization), corporate interests & seem to despise the Constitution because apparently it's all outdated & the Founding Fathers were racist, white men so that means they know better. There's nothing "Liberal" about indefinite detentions, NSA spying, drone strikes or destabilizing countries that aren't a threat to us like Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, et al.
To me, you sound like what people are starting to call a "liberaltarian," and I think you are in a growing group of people that need this new term to accurately describe your beliefs.

Quote:
A political philosophy that combines Liberalism and Libertarianism. Liberaltarians are usually left on fiscal issues, such as healthcare and tax policy, and libertarian on issues such as drug and prostitution legalisation. They often do not believe in some social liberal ideas such as affirmative action, smoking bans and hate crimes. They are usually anti war, as both liberalism and libertarianism are, and pro-same sex marriage. - Urban Dictionary: Liberaltarian
I don't think anyone is too crazy about indefinite detentions and drone strikes... those are conservative positions that Obama for some reason is continuing, every liberal/progressive I know is really pissed off at him about it. Not enough to vote for Republicans, who are no better of course, but very unhappy about it.

The Twin Cities are mainly people in office/information jobs who are benefiting from corporate interests and globalization, so no surprise there. The reason MN is so liberal overall though, I've been told, is that the people in Duluth & the Iron Range are more of the classic unionist, industrial anti-globalization democrats.

In my opinion, the words do mean the same thing. Liberal is just used by Republicans as a way to make Democrats sound bad, and Dems prefer "progressive," similar to the pro-life/anti-abortion pro-choice/anti-life word games.

Liberal classically means liberty and equality for all people. So, this kind of implies that we should get involved in other countries if their people are not getting that.

In economics, liberal means not having the state very involved in the economy, and is the main force in favor of globalization.

I do think being "progressive" by definition means you favor at least considering the possibility of changing the Constitution. I don't think anyone says it's "all outdated"; but it is only natural that some aspects will be outdated 250 years later, when we have had dramatic changes in every aspect of life and society.

Progressive means willing to scrap old ideas if it is warranted, being open to new information, and willing to consider radical changes objectively.

Many conservatives must be doing other stuff, I suppose.....or maybe I should be looking to suburban outlets for the conservative point of view, as many have mentioned.
Maybe they are too busy working?

More likely too busy doing something brainless like playing golf or watching football rather than reading or thinking.

Do you understand that the Constitution can be changed and has been many times? If so, are you unhappy with the amendment process specified in the Constitution now and, if so, how would you make it better?

I usually vote Democrat for labor reasons but I'm anything but a liberal. Minneapolis is full of Lance Armstrong, spandex wearing bicycle loving liberal children no doubt. But there are a few adults around.
