Minnesota Department of Agriculture claims tomatoes are in season in July. That was a surprise to me. I pretty much thought you had to wait till August unless it is from a greenhouse. Anyone see any Minnesota tomatoes in the farmers' markets?

Yes, and in my backyard The cool/wet spring slowed down the tomato crop though. Usually by now our cherry tomatoes are ripe. We are about a week away from them being fully ripe. Some of the early varieties are ready though.

We have some tomatoes in the green stage. In August everything will be turning ripe. According to the "seasonality" chart, this should have happened weeks ago. I agree there are tomatoes in July. But to just say July is the month the local tomatoes come to markets seems overstatement. AGAIN, unless they are including greenhouse started tomatoes. Those probably get several weeks start over field tomatoes.

Most tomato plants do get their start in a greenhouse--growing season is just too short otherwise

Yeh, I spose. We buy ours as little plants in May. Ground's too cold to have anything planted outside.

there's plenty of ways to get a jump on the growing season, these have been the best way to do so for us...

Neat! Only thing is that Master Gardeners have assured me roots should not be in soil under 50 degrees. Really, though I'm not the household gardener, I think we should have a portable greenhouse to be erected each spring and we can put the little plants on a table which is what we've done for years.
