There has been a lot of talk about branding the Twin Cities. What makes us special? What do we do about our winter? etc.
Why is winter such a downside? Why do we avoid a discussion of our winter?
Why is our winter just cross country skiing and flying kites on a lake?
Harbin, our sister city in China with cold hard winters, is one of the hottest tourist destinations in China. Everyone, including those who hate winter, fantasizes the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, one of the biggest of its kind in the world. The massive and fancy sculptures and night lights and interactive family activities make the place surreal. It's one of the most special places/events you must visit before you die. They have turned their winter into the biggest draw for their city, known for flocking tourists in the, yes, winter. Harbin, of course, is gorgeous in the summer. Everyone knows that already.
