Besides just driving around the area, what info could I look up to get a better or deeper picture of whether it's a place I'd want to live?

Reading that, it looks like a stupid question, yet I feel at a bit of a loss on it.

South of 98th Street towards the river is really nice...hilly, windy roads, big lots....much nicer than most areas of "Prestigious West Bloomington" and the neighborhoods Golfgal loves to frequent.

And for the rest of East Bloomington - "going downhill rapidly"?? The city is doing much to revitalize the area and lots of new restaurants and stores have gone up in the past couple months.

Wow, love Minnesota....but the narrow mindedness of so many people in the Cities prevails.....

WOW...really??? Hardly narrow minded when you drive through those areas and there are junked out cars, houses falling apart or boarded up, graffiti everywhere, lawns gone totally to weeds...but hey, if that's your cup of tea, great...

Bloomington may have parts that aren't the cream of the local crop. But I'd still rate practically every suburb as a reasonable choice, PROVIDED the transportation aspect works. We are facing years of road projects. If more and more transit connections happen (which will required, IMO, NOT spending 2 billion on SWLRT), that will help people who settle in suburbs cope with the road projects.

most of the un-informed here will tell you it's ghetto based on their limited drive-bys of a 2 block area tucked into the Cedar/494 interchange...don't pay any attention to them and drive Old Shakopee Rd from the MOA to 35W and explore the neighborhoods on your own to see how nice it is.
At least the river valley is still and always will be the predominate feature of East Bloomington (sorry MOA lovers). The citizen advocates getting the funding for the rebuild of the Old Cedar Ave bridge will keep folded, little tiny minds angry and active in this forum

This guy is the internet authority on the state's river bridges.

Long Meadow Bridge, Eagan, MN

Lots and lots of pictures. The structure is in very bad condition right now.
