a bit off the subject but in reference to the "lawns of the ghetto are still green"...its so true...some of the coolest looking properties in the city are on the northside. Its kind of deceptive.

teffosmom, check out my neighborhood (Victory) - you get the best of both worlds. It's a diverse neighborhood in the city where people do look out for eachother. There is a strong sense of community here and people really take care of/ are constantly improving their homes/ businesses (the handful that are here) in the neighborhood. Kids here go to Patrick Henry High (the school previous poster mentioned), tons of green space, and you can find some good deals on homes nowadays. I come from a family of educators and i would have no problem sending my kids to the public schools in the neighborhood.

If you are looking for a strong administrative team with strong emphasis on academics try District 196. I can't say enough about our administration--it is simply phenomenal! They are extremely supportive of the staff and the programs throughout the district. We have 5 high schools in our district, 4 of them have a full offering of academic clubs and athletics. The 5th high school is a school for environmental studies, the Zoo school as it is called since classes are held at the Minnesota Zoo. Students attending the Zoo school participate in sports or whatever at their home school.

Our son is in the marching band for Rosemount, State Champions, Upper Mid-West Champions. The principal at the high school often came to their practices over the summer just to watch. These were from 6-9PM, way outside his required time to be at school, just because he loves to watch them. One of the band directors challenged the kids that if they repeated as State Champs he would let them shave his very long hair. The principal and assistant principal got wind of this, came down to where they were shaving his head, donated $100 each to the band program and helped shave his head.

The superintendent sent a nice letter with a hand written note to all of the band students congratulating them on their success--all 175 members--that is a lot of time! It is little things like this that really go to show how much they enjoy what they do. Just walk into the school, spend 5 minutes with the staff and you KNOW they have great support.

The middle school principal was at the State Cross Country meet a few weeks ago, 20° temps and all, just because she wanted to support our boys team that was running. She goes to a lot of events at the high school as well as everything at the middle school.

I know what you are saying about absent administration and not getting support. The first district I taught in was like that and it sure makes your job harder then it has to be. You can't go wrong working in our district. It is tops in the state, it is financially stable and well supported by the community. They can made decisions based on class size and not budget constraints. We have lived here for a year and a half and are just THRILLED with the schools.
