I will be moving with my family to the Maple Grove/Plymouth area in a month or so and my wife is Dominican. I wanted to know if there is a Dominican hair salon in Minneapolis or any where in the area. I would also like to know how our family will fit into the area. We are moving from NY so diversity has never been an issue. Thanks for any information.

Ed

I haven't heard of any Dominican hair salons, and I don't know of any Dominican populations in the Metro area. There are afrocentric hair salons in the cities, I guess I'm not sure if you are looking for someone that can do your wife's hair or more of a cultural environment for her.

Plymouth/ Maple Grove has some diversity, not a lot to my knowledge but I would assume that these suburbs would be more diverse than some of the south/ southwest suburbs (but again, I don't know/ not sure).

The area is pretty white, and Dominicans do not have a large presence here. Nobody here is judgmental. If you and your wife are adjusted to the basics of American culture you will be well received. I am assuming that you are American and based on that you will be fine. If you were relying on New York diversity to connect to people, I am worried for you. Any problem will be from a lack of diversity, not any aversion to it.
As for salons, they will be Black and most likely urban.

You will have no problems ascimilating in Maple Grove. Your options for housing in Maple Grove will be tremendous. There are currently 367 single family homes on the market and 208 townhomes, condos and lofts available. There are some great bargains. Now is the perfect time to buy, if that is your intent. You'll be able to find a hair salon and any other service easily. Maple Grove is a mecca for shopping, etc. The world is your oyster!

I don't think there are any Dominican salons in the Twin Cities area. I know they're really popular on the east coast where you're from and other major cities (Chicago, Atlanta, etc.). If someone here did open one they'd make a killing for sure.

All, thanks for the information. I guess my wife will work out the hair thing. She did not seem to concerned when i told her. I'm pretty excited about moving and living some place different. I know the winters are cold but NY winter is no picnic either. I park on the street and parking is hard to find. When there is substantial snow it is even worse. You will also find you have to dig out your car from a wall of frozen snow that the city plow pushed up against your car. One day I could not even see my car under the snow.

there is a new salon located on 46th or 48th and Chicago ave. So. i don't know the name of the salon but it is owned by a Dominican woman who does beautiful hair. She prefers to do her own people but does not discriminate on who comes in. The shop is new beautiful and clean. i was very impressed by the layout. I thought it was a new black salon- that's how i stumbled upon it. It is 2 doors down from Trevors Barber shop off the corners of 46th and Chicago Ave. that area is very nice and safe to go to, coffee shops and restaurants. sorry i dont have a name.

Hi,

My name is Gladys and I am Dominican as well. I would like to meet you and your wife. Please email me at gtskendi@msn.com

I do not know how old your message is. Don't know of a Dominican hair stylist, but a great American hair stylist. And diversity is a huge draw back here. Hence, I'd like to meet you two.

Thanks,
Gladys
