The middle class areas are about the same quality of schooling. In CA, your kids can get in state tuition at Cal, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSB and Davis, all of which rank higher than U of MN. The income taxes are higher in CA, but are only 1-1.5% higher. MN doesn't exactly have low taxes. It's the cost of housing that is a killer in CA. In MN you are balling if you make $130K but in CA you are not.
MN leads the nation in average ACT and SAT (combined average) scores, CA ranks somewhere in the 30's....not even close....

MN has led the nation in average ACT score for many, many years and has never been outside of the top 5, California is in the 30th rank somewhere...

Yes, but the average score you're talking about is the equivalent of getting 63% on the test. There are more bad schools in CA which bring the averages down. The high performing schools in Silicon Valley and LA have no equivalent in MN.

Huh???

It's the only measure we currently have to evaluate students on a national basis. Average should be about 60%...given the definition of average...

Schools don't matter as much as the kids that attend them.

My Hopkins high school used to be an awesome school, now it sucks. It's because the inner city kids now go there. same programs and most of the same teachers.

Only difference are the kids.
