One of the many vexing results of the winter cold is a lot of pipes bursting. People ending up with no water in the tap. In the newspaper, city officials were saying if your tap water is as low as 35 degrees, turn on faucets to drip all the time, just to insure water is cycling through, not sitting in one spot and freezing up. I haven't noticed our cold water being that cold, but we have a space heater that adds a little bit of heat to our basement all the time.

newspapers are telling people to let both( hot and cold ) facets run slightly.

I doubt a very slight " drip" will help.

I would turn it on more so the drip becomes a very slight stream.

Actually I saw it as a news story on TV. And there was NO mention of hot water. Water from the hot water heater is not going to free in a pipe.

Hot water pipes can freeze if they run along an exterior wall or an unheated basement. Hot supply pipes are only hot when water is running through them. They can freeze just as easily as cold supply pipes when your faucets are off.

I guess where they freeze, inhabitants aren't laundering, washing hands, washing dishes, or taking showers. And any line can freeze in an exterior wall. Even mild winters could freeze those pipes. One thing that is freezing some places are the actual lines underground bringing the water supply. The frost layer this year is down to over 4 feet.

No reason for water pipes in Minnesota to be buried less than 6-7 ft.

Also, I'm betting those hot water lines freeze at night when most people are not........."laundering, washing hands, washing dishes, or taking showers"
