Sorry but I LOL'd because Minnesotans do love to say that about Iowa.

Thank you!

Just wanted to clarify (as that post focused mainly on two things) we really do like it here. There is a LOT to offer in the area, and we plan on being here a long time!

For example, something like "I'm sorry" or "Oh, there is nothing worse" are typical responses. When I lived in Iowa and met someone out of state that moved there and asked where they are from, I stated "Oh that's great, why did you move here?"...not, "Your state sucks". It's been a very, very negative experience.

I state this by qualifying myself as an outgoing person who strives on networking, being objective and making new friends. It's been disappointing, Minnesota.
I am originally from Iowa and have noticed the same thing. It's strange. Often when I start talking with people it comes out that they have never even been to Iowa (or maybe only drove through on 35 once). The literal immediate response of "I'm sorry" after someone figures out you are from Iowa is also odd. It makes me wonder if there isn't some history with that phrase, maybe something similar to the history of "cold Omaha". I also don't mind a friendly joke about Iowa (something about corn or pigs perhaps?). But, it seems like people say something that is basically "Iowa is bad".

I think that Iowa thing is a weird old small town scandinavian-mn joke that sort of took a life of its own.

Older people in my extended family say that all the time, not necessarily about Iowa, but about other towns, and almost anything. I can hear my grandma and uncle and grandpa saying it right now. You went to St. Olaf? Sorry to hear that. Moving to California? I'm sorry... Etc.
