Sometimes the local library care a copy of every text used in your district. Check the reference section.

School districts should make deals allowing them to print pages to study, not buy whole books. I took a history course in college where our reading was divided between mimeographed pages and the reserve reading library. With tuition being so high, that would be an excellent route for all levels of schools. Music production companies have figured out a business model to sell songs profitably outside of albums. I'm sure textbook production companies could figure that out, too. Or just "print" everything in PDF.

You might try Khan Academy - some wonderful, concise animations/presentations for concepts (esp. Math). And some not so great. But a lot to see.

Also, Merlot.org is a huge learning object repository. Their offerings for grade school is somewhat fewer than for high school or higher ed, but their advanced search function will lead you right to what they have.

Kinda restricts where study can happen and who can do it. But if something is there online, it can be printed and used wherever in the house is a good environment. And still not weigh a ton in a backpack.

Why would it be restricted??? Laptops are pretty portable or, if you use an online textbook, your computer would be set up in a "productive" area....

Because a family might have one to share? So it really depends on how much time one needs with a given piece of material. I guess if the parents are high paid professionals, then everybody has their own laptop or tablet. But this discussion can't assume that situation.

We have a copy of the math textbook here at home. Contact the math teacher directly and ask if you can borrow a copy for the remainder of the school year. At our school the kids do have their own copies of all the textbooks and are expected to bring them home to do homework. My son's backpack gets so heavy with all the big textbooks, and because he walks I asked for copies of the texts to keep here at home.

Not sure what math curriculum you're looking at but Everyday Math has parent letters that can help you online or the teacher can send it home. How old are your kids? Younger kids typically don't bring the books home but perhaps if you asked they could.
