And I love St. Olaf, but it's definitely not in the same circle as Mac and Carleton reputation-wise.

My husband went to St. Thomas, but I don't think anyone he's worked with or has interviewed with has had any familiarity with the school.

I highly doubt that Mac's liberal reputation is holding them back. Is it going to appeal to everyone? No, of course not. But since when have ultra-liberal reputations held colleges back? Vassar, Brown, Sarah Lawrence, Bard... kids aren't exactly avoiding these schools.

For people who really care about national name recognition, while Carleton (or Mac) are good, they're still better off elsewhere. I think anyone who is familiar with Carleton is going to be familiar with Macalester.
In my experience in the college world, you are wrong....but with your 5 year old in the college process, I'm sure you have had a different experience.... and yes, schools like Vassar and Mac are niche schools and do attract a certain segment of the population.

Your husbands employer in Minneapolis has never heard of St. Thomas, REALLY??? Weird......

One mention of colleges to go to for music and St. Olaf is one of the top 3 mentioned almost universally....

Nationally, Carleton has the best reputation of the private schools in Minnesota. It's not even that close.

Macalaster has been trying to get to that level, but they aren't yet. Locally/Regionally, St. Thomas (and just behind them, St. Johns/St. Bens and St. Kates) are probably the top private schools, but they don't have the influence that St. Thomas does. The rest of the MIAC schools are pretty much on the same level, and below that is Concordia-St. Paul (which was a nothing school until they decided to push their night school and grad programs) and then after that you have the smaller schools like Scholastica, Crown, Martin Luther etc.
