A car trip up to the Twins from Indy is a bit of a long stretch so I figure just flying up there would be quicker and easier. I plan on using the Hiawatha lightrail line from the airport instead of renting a car. I plan on visiting the Mall of America and downtown with my daughter. Any suggestions as to which hotels in the area I could stay within close walking distance to one of the train stations? 100-140 a night is my budget. Bloomington? Downtown? Airport? Thanks Btw, how long is the flight between both cities? I've only driven up there which takes forever.

There is a Country Inn and Suites across the street from the MOA and almost directly across the street from the rail station in the MOA. There is a Best Western down from that, same street, a couple blocks down that was just renovated. I haven't been in that one though. There is an Embassy Suites and a Holiday Inn near another rail stop about a mile from the MOA. Prices for those hotels should be around your budget depending on when you are coming and what else is going on then. Most of the hotels in the area have a free shuttle to the airport and MOA so you could stay further out and take the shuttle back and forth from your hotel to the MOA and then catch the rail into Minneapolis when you want to go there. Hotels in Eagan and Mendota Heights are where you would want to look for those. There is a Microtel on Lone Oak Road that runs around $60 or so a nice. Rooms are small and I don't think they have a pool but it's clean and fine if you just want a place to sleep.

Flight time--an hour or so?? The drive is 8-9 hours or so.

We stayed at that Microtel when we came here house hunting. It is a good deal, but Microtel doesn't have an airport shuttle. Try Days, Ramada or Super 8.

are you coming in for a weekend? that's a great time to book hotels downtown because they rely more on the week-day business bookings. I'd rather stay downtown than out in Bloomington...much more to do. You can get a 4-star hotel on hot wire on the weekends for less than a $100. probably wouldn't stay in Egan, that'd be dumb.

Yeah, there's not much out there along the highway. That Lone Oak Microtel Inn was advertised as Microtel Eagan/St. Paul. St. Paul was our destination, but it's about 10 miles north. Since we got there after dark I remember being pretty disoriented in the day, wondering where everything was.

Really? They used to. We used to stay there before flights out before we moved to the Twin Cities.

10 miles north of what? It's about 2 blocks off 35E.

I meant that St. Paul is 10 miles north of the hotel. It was our first time in Minnesota. We flew in at night, rented a car and drove straight to the hotel. When I say it was disorienting in the daytime, it's because I didn't really see any evidence of Eagan (and had no idea of the size of Eagan), and St. Paul was nowhere in sight. It was just off a highway surrounded by wide open space.

Ahh, makes sense. I don't know if it's like this elsewhere but suburbs technically have either a St. Paul or Minneapolis zip code so that kind of goofs up addresses, etc. along with places using St. Paul or Minneapolis to orient their location in the Twin Cities. Lone Oak is pretty much on the very northern Edge of Eagan.
