And when I brought up north face, it wasn't to imply that it was a superior brand. I just meant it was everywhere in MN (recall, the topic of this thread is TC style) and people really seem to see it as a status simple here in Minnesota. Coming from the East Coast - I personally do not.

I remember North Face down jackets being a status thing growing up in California in the 70s. They were definitely expensive. I think I had a vest at one point.

I don't think North Face is a status thing here. It's just a warm coat. For status, I would think an upper-class hockey mom would go for a higher-end brand - Moncler or Canada Goose or whatever else is hot these days. North Face is expensive, certainly, but it's not going to impress anyone. My impression is that they are actually more of a status item in other cities, while in the TC they're just another winter essential -- at least for the adults. For teenagers, things may well be different.

I don't see people in Edina running around in North Face unless they are 16 years old....and especially not 40+ year old women.

In my case, I had 2 older siblings who worked in natural resources. For them, high-quality jackets like North Face were a necessity in the field, but there were not a million styles and a full clothing line like today. In any case my mom was not going to drop that kind of money for something I'd grow out of. If I wanted one, I had to buy it myself.

A couple of month's ago I bought a North Face field jacket with the zip-in fleece at an end-of-season sale - the first NF I've had since that one vest I bought as a teen in CA. I thought I wouldn't even use it until next winter but in this wet, cold spring the shell has been great, especially since I've been working outdoors a lot.
