I just got Republic as well and so far so good. I haven't made enough voice calls to really comment on the wifi to cell handoff when you leave an area, but other than that, it's great. I'm loving paying $25/month vs $83 with Verizon Wireless. The 5GB cap is more than enough since I don't use my data for streaming anything. It's about time that the US got good, cheap non-contract plans like the rest of the world has had since the beginning. Now if we can also get that cheaper broadband, then we'd really be set.

Hmm, being able to use the same phone would save the effort of selling his current phone and buying another one. On the other hand, I think he finds there's too much stuff on the phone and it's confusing. I'll have to check whether he really wants to give up data.

The friend doesn't have internet service at home. Would that make these wifi versus cell plans more expensive?

I'll be passing this (and any other) info on early next week. If he decides to go with one of these and is willing to use the referral, I'll PM the poster.

Thanks for all this so far, and feel free to keep posting more!

If it's only for talk with Ting it won't matter and if there's no WiFi network with Republic then it would just be over the regular network so either would still work. I think the advantage to Ting when there's more than one user sharing minutes plus the bring your own Sprint phone is handy. If it were just one phone and no internet at home I'd probably go with Republic unless this is someone who won't use data at all. We looked at Republic too and liked it and if I need unlimited that's where I'll go. I find we don't need it though since home/work etc. is WiFi.
