The Arbor Lakes shopping area is probably one of the best shopping districts in the metro and better than anything in Woodbury, that is one big thing i am jealous of.
Arbor Lakes is awesome. Whole Foods, Trader Joes, World Market right next to each other. On the other side Costco, Lowes, Marshalls, etc, etc, etc. Plus dozens more major retail stores and restaurants. So in the winter just about every purchase can be handled in one run. That's huge.

Eventually we want to be closer to Minneapolis but right now having Arbor Lakes less than 10min away is almost too good to be true. Especially as California transplants.

They are both similar. both outdoorsy, safe, good shopping, on the edge of the metro. but both cities just have a different layout, navigating through Maple Grove seems impossible without gps. and Maple Grove has more older homes.

I live in MG and have a close friend who lives in Woodbury.

The cities are indeed on opposite sides of the metropolitan area. You may want to choose the city based on where you will be working. The cities are fairly comparable in terms of demographics. Both have a mix of shopping and housing. Woodbury is closer to Wisconsin in case you might vacation there.

I love the Arbor Lakes area for shopping. Woodbury has those outlets. I think it's a toss up between cities. This year MG did get Money Mag's nomination for second best city to live in. Woodbury is usually near the top too.

You could also consider Eden Prairie if you are interested in the south side.
