Is there a one stop spot where all of the childcare places in the area are posting? I see at home care on craiglist, but it seems on the low end. We will have a toddler we need to find daycare for in April/May.

I do not know of any centralized listing service, aside for the licensing database: Search, MN DHS Licensing Info Lookup
If you use that website, choose "child care center" for in-center options or "family child care" for in-home options. You can then search by ZIP code.

This only shows you the places that are actively licensed to provide child care. You would have the visit and vet each location yourself.

Think Small - Leaders In Early Learning is the only comprehensive site, but it isn't very useful. You will find the best places by word of mouth and there are some good listings depending on where you are looking - it is all very neighborhood specific.

This turned out to be very useful. They have like 40+ daycares in a 5 mile radius of my house.

I emailed about 10 places, and one lady responded saying she had no openings, but she knew others who were having infant openings in the next 3 months, and gave me 5 email addresses of other people locally.

From that one of the ladies has an opening for $150 a week in May, which is about when we are looking to start! So thanks a LOT for the link.

If this is an in-home daycare, make sure you check their license (and any actions against them) along with the standard vetting process (interview, speaking with references). Its scary to base a childcare decision entirely on a random referral from someone you don't even know.

I know, we'll vet them like we have been the centers. If anyone files a complaint against them, is the site to see that on Search, MN DHS Licensing Info Lookup?

The star rating on the Think Small site can be helpful. Even providers with a lower star rating have gone through a thorough vetting process. (I say this as the husband of a provider with a 2-star rating). Best wishes in your search finding care - with a toddler it should be easier than an infant.
