Obviously each city is going to have different strengths in their restaurant landscape.

Montreal (for example) is best known for poutine, smoked meat, Calgary for Indian food, Toronto for Chinese food...

What are the Twin Cities best for, as far as restaurants are concerned?

Scratch kitchens and Craft Beer seems to be the new upcoming thing in the Twin Cities and outlying areas.

Minneapolis is an up-and-coming culinary city that's starting to build a nationwide reputation. Saveur magazine recently published this glowing article-

Where to Eat in Minneapolis | SAVEUR

but the culinary renaissance here has been going on for nearly a decade

I would say the strengths of the Minneapolis scene would be:

Local, farm-to-table ingredients
Accessible fine dining
Independent chef-driven eateries (it's far easier for an up and coming chef to open her or his own joint here than in many markets)

But aside from the new-new, for the past 25 years or so, the Twin Cities have had a strong Vietnamese contingent. In fact, it was specifically lauded by Anthony Bourdain-

I'm excited to be here during this time, it's fun to see a burgeoning scene.

There may well be a number of independent chef-driven eateries but other than Vietnamese food, is the Twin Cities restaurant scene strong in a particular type of cuisine?

Accessible fine-dining and independent chef-driven eateries are cuisine-independent, while local, farm-to-table ingredients narrows it down to a smaller range of cuisines.

Vietnamese is the strongest regional cuisine in the Twin Cities. There are also a lot of East Africans who live near the U of MN west bank, so there are good Ethiopian restaurants, too. That said, I would not say the area is "known" for any particular cuisine.

Poor old West St. Paul... with one exception I have to agree that it doesn't have much to offer other than fast food. However, having said that, one of my favorite restaurants is located on Robert St. Beirut which is owned by a Lebanese family serves many delicious authentic Lebanese dishes. I don't get there often as we live quite far away, but when I do they never fail us. Yum!
