Hi, I'm a tropical transplant and after 3 years of living here I still haven't figured out the ways of the Minnesotans as to how to dress for the Winters.

I thought instead of going all over the web, I would ask some of you for help. I am not looking to spend more than $400 on a new Jacket, I'm a 29 year old Male.

I should mention that I am not a fan of looking like I'm going on a Ski trip everytime I go out, so I definitely like a little more business-ey/Urban look, but I'm skeptical of whether I'd have to sacrifice warmth in order to look that way.

Could any of you throw me some suggestions of what jacket you've used, and roughly how much you've paid for it? I would greatly appreciate any help.

Thank you!

Its more construction worker than it is business-like, but maybe something like a Carhradt jacket would fit the bill. You can find them at Fleet Farm. The one I have is one of the warmer ones they make. I think I got it for about $80.

I used to be a pedestrian in this city, taking the bus and walking everywhere in nothing more than a wool peacoat - and usually a sweater. I was always warm. The key is to dress in layers. Perhaps TMI, but I just got this at the Southdale Gap this weekend for 40% off.. $58. Quilted pufer jacket | Gap

I have a one color North Face jacket that isn't very heavy, but it's warm, paid around $100. I also have a nice heavy black leather jacket with removable liner that is super warm, too warm actually. Paid a few hundred for it in Canada.

Yeah honestly any good quality wool coat is going to fit the bill. I have a black wool coat that I used to wear out on the town that was quite warm. If you will have to spend a lot of time waiting for the bus etc. in crap weather then you might want to reconsider whether the ski jacket is worth it because they do perform better than anything else.

Costco has a nice "down sweater" (basically a less puffy version of a down/puffer coat-- usually with stretch panels on the side, so you look less stay-puff marshmallow like) for about $30-- they're sporty and good for weekends, might be too casual for an office. They're warm enough for 20-30* and would make a great layer under a wool coat for the coldest days. You might want to check out Burlington Coat Factory, Marshalls, or Nordstrom Rack for a great price on a dressier wool coat, they're sure to have a great pea coat-- but, as Tipsy said, wool won't be as warm (nor as washable) as a great down coat.

I like the look and quality of L.L. Bean coats.

I would suggest the Nor'easter Commuter Coat with Gore-Tex (very breathable), knee-length in blue and I often leave it open in the front bc it can become too warm in certain weather. It cost $300 right now but if you pick the right time you can get it on sale for a better price (I got mine for $219). I also own the Maine Wardens 3-1 parka (I paid $269 sells at $349)-warmest coat I have but would have liked it at knee-length. My Original Field coat is my go to Fall coat at $129 and I paid $69. My favorite coat is appears to be no longer sold by them and was called, if memory serves, the Sherpa. It looks like a military jacket and is the most commented on by strangers asking about it. It used to price out at $199 but i got it for $129. Other than the useless decorative straps on the shoulder, it's a great coat but not for temps around 5 degrees or below.

I have more, but I am just listing some possibilities that might fit what you are asking and that are from L.L. Bean who I think produce quality that lasts, good performance, and looks decent. My other activities require more performance and durability style coats and gear.

The reason I have so many coats (I have even more than listed) is because I am more active in the winter than summer. Hunting, cross country skiing, ice fishing, snowmo, walking, hiking, fat tire biking, and also snow shoe hiking. I think the biggest barrier for people liking the winter is they really don't know how to dress and function comfortably in the cold.

I second that. I just bought one of the Storm Chaser coats. It has a nice fleece coat that comes out easily and the outside is waterproof or at least very resistant. We have actually been having some very cold nights here in Oregon. (cold for us but still balmy for those in Minnesota :-) Only in the 40's during the day and mid 20's at night. I love this and would like even more if it would snow.

But also as others have said dress in layers. I also have a couple Bean's river driver shirts.
