What it boils down to is that no ONE place is perfect for everyone (otherwise, the entire population of the US would live in just ONE region)-- some places have ridiculously high housing prices, have grid-locked traffic, have 'scary' weather or other features (i.e. tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, blizzards, flooding, extreme heat, etc)-- and the list goes on and on.

MSP works great for many people-- as you mentioned, it's a great place to raise a family-- but if you don't like it here, there are 49 other states and hundreds and hundreds of other countries to explore or even to move to, should you choose to do so.

FYI to OP. The distance from Phoenix, AZ to South Lake Tahoe, CA is 740 miles. Phoenix is in southern AZ, while Lake Tahoe is a long distance north of there on the CA/NV border. Not very close at all. Minneapolis is far closer to Chicago than that: 408 miles. The MSP airport with several non-stop flights is a godsend to those traveling to other cities, especially in winter. Most places in the U.S are a few hours or less away and only a few are four hours or more away.

I'm not quite certain what the intent of the original post was but the title is misleading. People leave for many reasons. And it's no secret that Minnesota is not near the ocean. The people that stay don't mind.

Not trying to dig on MSP here, but the OP was making a specific point about the convenience of driving to nearby areas to enjoy different types of terrain. This is a lifestyle option that is important to many people and difficult to achieve in most of the central and eastern plains.

The fact that you can take a four hour flight somewhere is completely beside the point.

And btw, a four hour flight is seven hours of travel time. Two hours in the front and one hour in the back minimum. Just saying.

Beside your point for sure, but a perfectly valid point for people that choose to fly though. BTW, flights to most other US cities are less (and often considerably) than 4 hours from MSP...Denver, Chicago, St. Louis, New Orleans, Nashville & Dallas to mention some. Many coastal cities will be approx. 4 hours. There are all types of points allowed on this forum. LOL. You make yours. Others will make theirs.

Since you mentioned driving, compare Phoenix to Minneapolis/St. Paul. I personally would prefer Minneapolis/St. Paul to Phoenix for driving options, too. There is just so much desert land to travel through in and around Phoenix before reaching a worthwhile destination (Sedona, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, etc). It is easier to enjoy both the journey and destination from Minneapolis/St. Paul (Lake Superior North Shore, Great River Road, northern MN lakes/forests, Chicago, Wisconsin Dells, Black Hills, etc). There is definitely hilly land in SE Minnesota along the Mississippi River and along Lake Superior in NE Minnesota, not to mention a few other places. There is also much more "green" in spring/summer and very colorful fall foliage. Some people like a drier, more arid landscape, though. So for them that is good. Different strokes for different folks. Had an uncle that thought the desert was beautiful. We agreed to disagree.

Actually...It was besides the OP's point since he was speaking of driving and you were responding directly to his post. "FYI to OP"

But you're correct that it is an open forum, so deviate as much as you like.

How you propose to get from Phoenix to the beach? It's a five to seven hour drive, depending on whether you go to Mexico or California. You also talked about Phoenix being convenient to Lake Tahoe. That's a 12 hour drive. They're all drivable but hardly convenient.

And this may shock the OP but not everyone wants to be around mountains or the ocean. But if the OP wants to live somewhere other than the Twin Cities I would not try to change his mind.
