OK, so I'm watching the MTM Show on MeTV right now and reminded me of two questions I've been longing to ask for ... well, a VERY long time!

1. How much of Minneapolis shown in the original 1970 opening sequence is still recognizable today?

2. Has anybody ever tried to find out who that woman was who stopped on the sidewalk and stared straight into the camera when Mary threw her hat in the air? It has annoyed me for YEARS!

Most of what is shown on the opening scenes is visible today. In the initial season, it shows footage along I-494 near Highway 100 (with high rise Radisson South hotel (now Sheraton) visible). Then there are skyline shots entering downtown from I-35w (pre IDS Center, very different skyline today). There's a few winter shots around Lake of the Isles. Finally there are shots along Nicollet Mall--the only buildings remaining there would be Daytons Department Store (now Macy's) at 7th & Nicollet, Midwest Plaza Building at 801 Nicollet Mall (fictional home to WJM News). The IDS was under construction when the original opening was filmed.

Later they had more shots around the lakes, in the Kenwood neighborhood, and (starting around 1973) shots in the IDS crystal Court. The bottom video is a great report from WCCO TV on the filming around Minneapolis in 1973.

Her name was Hazel Frederick, and she was a lifelong Minnesota resident (I believe she resided in Brooklyn Park) who happened to have the day off work and was shopping downtown when the opening credits were shot. She was simply curious as to what was going on and ended up being the "extra" in the scene. She passed away several years ago.

More about the show and the local places featured therein...

Quote:
Mary Richards lived on the third floor of an old Queen Anne Victorian in Minneapolis, Minnesota, behind those signature Palladian windows with the iron balcony.
Quote:
The owners of the house got so tired of drive-by gawkers when the show was in its heyday that they hung an “IMPEACH NIXON” sign across the front of the house so the show couldn’t shoot new exterior shots to use in later seasons.

Was the "impeach Nixon" sign around the time the show moved Mary to an apartment at Cedar Riverside? :-)

I think it's safe to say the "impeach Nixon" signs are the reason Mary moved to Cedar Square West. As shown in the Moore on Sunday special (posted above), the owner of the Kenwood mansion was tired of all the tourists (can't blame her Imo)
