I am moving to Minneapolis today, and I'm super excited! I have taught second grade the last two years in Indianapolis, and am currently looking for a teaching job in Minneapolis. I have not gotten a lot of responses yet in my job search, so I was wondering what the teaching field was like in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Is it hard to get a teaching job? Do most people get hired at the last minute? Should I be worried about not finding a job? Thank you!

I've heard that it is pretty tight for jobs right now.

My Niece just graduated this spring and has an interview for a 2nd grade job next week. She heard there were 200 applicants. My nephew's fiancee' just got laid off from her kindergarten job after 3 years on the job and has to reapply with 4 other teachers in her school for 1 of 2 jobs (they let all the non-tenured teachers go as their numbers for next year are projected to be down).

I do believe that a lot of schools are making hiring decisions now through August but believe there's a lot of competition.

Good luck!

I have several friends who are in the education field and I am afraid that based on their experiences jobs are pretty hard to come by. They mostly had to resort to "teaching" preschool or subbing for a few years before they were able to get into an regular teaching position. A word of warning on that: if you do wind up signing up with a substitute teaching agency, read your contract carefully before you sign anything. One friend wound up in a very bad situation where her contract forbid her from going to work directly for any of the schools she had been placed at as a sub. She didn't have much choice because she was desperate for the work, but each new school she was sent to was another place she was ineligible for direct hire without a huge buyout to her agency. She finally did find a permanent position, but it was a vicious cycle for a while there.

@StPaulGal were these all friends that didn't have any prior teaching experience? I was hoping my two years of teaching in Indy would help give me a leg up, but now I'm afraid this is not the case...

Having two-year experience will help especially if they were two-year teaching in the inner-city or other underserved populations. Plenty of veteran teachers are laid-off every year in Minnesota, some with two-decades teaching experience, and are applying for open positions.

It'll be tougher for them because they will need to be paid the higher salary based on steps-and-lanes, and school districts will not want to do that, especially when there is an oversupply of new fully credentialed 23-year-old graduates from any number of MN colleges and universities teaching programs who can be paid at the bottom step of the salary schedule.

Only 200-applicants for one teaching vacancy in the Upper Midwest seems low; usually more applicants. Regularly check the Ed Post teaching position vacancy website from St. Cloud State University. They are constantly adding new job openings, so Good Luck!

I believe most were new teachers. The one with whom I am closest was definitely a fresh college grad at the time, but the rest were friends of friends so I'm not entirely certain what their background is.

Elementary school jobs are probably the hardest teaching jobs to obtain in the cities. There are more opportunities if you have experience in the sciences, special ed or are willing to work in a rural area.
