Along with Lakeville, I'm finding a lot of affordable places in Chaska and Shakopee.....especially Shakopee. Also see a place we like out in Waconia. We wouldn't mind country living at all (if that's what Waconia is), but don't want to be 10 miles from the nearest grocery store or anything like that. Can someone give me the lodown on these latter 3 areas? I'm coming up next week to get the house but would like some local input to help me prepare. Thanks.

A couple hours after this post, I found this on Wikipedia's Waconia, MN page:

"It's known for its regionally high crime rate and is a popular site for located bodies of missing persons."

WTF? That has to be a joke right?

Chaska, Shakopee, and Waconia are all nice communities. Waconia is the farthest away from the metro core and would be your longest commute to Edina. It's a cute town with a great lake. I can't comment on the Wikipedia article but there are grocers in town including Jerry's, Mackenthun's and County Market. There is also a Target which carries groceries. Beyond that, it's about a 20-25 minute drive to Chanhassen and Eden Prairie for your other shopping needs.

Chaska is a very nice community with a historic "downtown." Shakopee also has a "downtown" and is home to ValleyFair (amusement park) and Canterbury Park (casino and horse racing venue). It's a nice community but is becoming more and more suburban and congested, particularly in summer when people flock to the aforementioned entertainment destinations.

I think each of these communities have a similar vibe and would be fine to live in, but I'd still choose Lakeville or perhaps Apple Valley simply because they are more centrally located and offer an easier commute to Edina and other metro area destinations such as downtown Minneapolis/St. Paul, Mall of America, the zoo, and airport.

That's fantastic, good find! I know nothing about Waconia, beyond that I think I have driven through it and I survived. But I love that description.

The pictures and video I've seen of Waconia don't line up with it being a crime hotbed, that's for sure. Looks pretty nice to me.

You know I did a little googling and realized that there was a case last summer/fall where a guy went out paddle-boarding in a lake by Waconia and disappeared. The body was found a few months later by a guy ice fishing with an underwater camera. I'm guessing someone was thinking of that and thought it was a dark humor thing to add to the webpage.

I remember the story when it happened, but didn't really ever pay attention to exactly where it was.

Well, we did wind up in Lakeville after all. Oh my word, there was nearly NOTHING available before June 1st to rent in that entire metro! I finally found 3 places - in Shakopee, Prior Lake, and Lakeville - and it came right down to the wire, merely hours before I got on the plane back to TX before I was able to finally sign a lease for the Lakeville house. That was really where we wanted to be to begin with......although we loved Prior Lake as well....but Lakeville allows me to jump on 35 and shoot right up to Edina for work. Anyway, what an ordeal! Like our new landlord said....."It's a landlord's paradise here right now". He aint lyin'!

Moving next week. Can't wait.
