Yea, I've been going to Hastings to volunteer at their animal shelter since the 90s and while recently it has added new shops and businesses, it definitely wasn't a "nice" area but that's all personal opinion, I guess.

There is truly nothing wrong with Cottage Grove. It just has to compete with the affluent suburb of Woodbury. The housing prices between both suburbs reflect that.
There is a strong blue collar and white collar divide between the northern side of Washington County (Lake Elmo, Woodbury, Stillwater and the Southern side (Cottage Grove, Hastings, Newport). This might be the other reason for the perception.

They have a fair amount of shopping and the schools aren't horrible, it's just not significantly exciting or good. The best parts of cottage grove are the ones on the border of Woodbury IMO.
Took the words right out of my mouth!

Stanton, interesting thoughts in these communities but you need to get a map. The north side of Washington County would be Forest Lake and Hugo. Woodbury is part of the South Washington County School district, so that title should tell you something about it's location. Hastings is not even in Washington County, it's in Dakota County.

WoodburyWoody,
Interesting links but did you even read them? Here is part of what is written"
Perfluorochemical Waste
Perfluorochemical (PFC) containing wastes were disposed of by the 3M Company at the 3M disposal sites in Oakdale, Woodbury, and Cottage Grove, and the former Washington County Landfill in Lake Elmo. PFCs were released from the sites, resulting in contamination of groundwater and nearby drinking water wells.

So this would actually be an argument against moving to Oakdale, WOODBURY, Cottage Grove, or Lake Elmo then. So why just picking on Cottage Grove? Anyway, also only an issue for WELL water. The city water in all these four towns is just fine. If you are moving any where with well water, I might consider getting it tested.

Actually, it is much of the East Metro, you are correct. The OP was talking specifically about CG.

PFCs have shown up in wildlife in the Arctic and Greenland. Scientists are still studying PFCs to determine if there are health effects associated with long-term exposure.

We live in Woodbury and are on city water pulled up from the Jordan Aquifer. We have close friends working in 3M environmental health and safety, the 3M CG facility and know people who work for the MCPA. Without hesitation, we filter the city water at our home.

Hastings is, in fact, the county seat of Dakota County - though it is quite remote from and different in character from the parts of the county where the majority of its population lives: Burnsville/Apple Valley/Eagan suburban area.

You know people at the MPCA? Know any of the high up directors who all retired a few years ago? My father was one of them, he knows all about the 3M site in Cottage Grove.

No, they are still with MPCA.

It was more of a regional comparing and contrasting. Cottage Grove is in many ways competing with Woodbury. Woodbury is closer to shopping and the amenities that make up a desirable suburb. Cottage Grove is just left behind. I would choose to live in CG because it seems less snooty than Woodbury.
