Why would the folks in charge of such a project allow it to be installed? It does not seem they thought it through very well. If they had, they would have right away said you may not want to do this idea... it might not be a good idea? At least one person, at least should have had the insight to say something, maybe have courage to speak out? Wonder though how many folks this idea passed by and it still made it through.

The intent of the sculpture was to speak against capital punishment. It would seem that no one is able to predict the direction that righteous indignation will take anymore.

I can see the whole picture.

The artist wanted to show a piece in history that was bad, really bad. The artwork work give an opportunity for discussion for this generation.

And I can see where it would really be emotional for the Dakota people to have it there.

Maybe a missed opportunity now that it had to be taken down for the Dakota to spread the word how horrific this time period was for their people.
And for this generation to listen.

I don't like how the Native Americans were wiped out and treated.
And I dont like it that there aren't many today amongst us.

This has been a headlining story locally for the last week or so. Honestly the whole thing bores me to death. There are much more significant and interesting things happening in the news right now.

This is kind of this artist's M.O. It's part of a long history of these kind of shenanigans on the part of cultural institutions as well (poor oversight of painful culturally connected stories told by (profiting) people from outside those cultures). I think the Walker handled this massive gaffe pretty well after waking up, but it really should have never gotten this far.

Thank Ctulhu for removing this monstrosity from the Sculpture Garden "by whatever means necessary" - I want quirky, whimsical, and fun there. What is next, a few walk-in crematoria?

It was stupid not to ask natives for their thoughts and input from the start.

Agree! Put a capital "S" on Stupid in this instance. The American Indian Movement has its headquarters in Minneapolis! The Walker Art Center and AIM are probably not more than 5 miles apart. Would have been very easy to set up a meeting with Native American leaders. No airplane travel required for either group. At least they resolved the matter and learned a lesson. However, discussing it in advance would have prevented the controversy & complications. Fwiw, it was definitely not an attractive sculpture IMO, anyways.
