We're still quite new to the area and hoping to find ways for our 13 yo to connect with other kids and make some friends. We're planning to find parent groups as well to see if we can come at this from a few angles to basically increase the number of folks we know with kids in his age range.

I'm wondering about teen centers, programs for LGBTQ families (not at all exclusive to this, but I know that he likes that), groups that enjoy music, etc.

If you have/had kids in this age range when they were new to the city. How did you help them build connections? We've done some sports and didn't find the particular groups to be socially cohesive/connecting. Also, have found some kids already kind of have their groups set.

Looking for secular options more than anything. Thanks.

I don't have kids but have nieces and nephews. My nephews are all grown up now but they used to and my nieces still do summer camp programs centered around their interests. I'm sure that would be a great way for your kids to 'network'.

Yes - makes sense. We're enrolled in a few summer camps. What we might be looking for in addition is places/programs that encourage friend making and social connection. We're working on doing that ourselves and hopefully some of the summer camps we've chosen will have that bent, but it seems to be something we have to work at - which is fine.

In other places we have lived I think there is more of a cultural assumption that building friendships is part of the experience. Still testing that theory out a bit and our own role in facilitating it.

A lot of kids enjoy playing Duck Duck Gray Duck, it is very fun and involves many kids. That will bring a lot of longtime memories for them.

Every thing we did as kids around the Jr. High age is now illegal. Your best bet these days is online Chat Rooms, or Facebook.

What is your general neighborhood? Then you might get some more specific ideas.
