The point is that overall police are not in greater danger than in past years. I agree that we don't know the circumstances of this incident, meaning we can only meaningfully talk about the environment in which this shooting took place. This environment is not one of exceptional danger to police.
The biggest problem with your list of STATS is NOT even close to accurate~~ Giving you the benefit of a doubt, I think it's important to point out the WHYS??

But transparent police departments are by no means the norm: the United States has no uniform count of people killed by police officers. The problem of missing data stems from more than just police obstructionism or oversight. A national infrastructure for data collection has never been built. Instead a confusing mosaic of city, state and county reporting leaves too many cracks for data to fall through, without imposing consequences for local police failing to report when they kill those they are sworn to protect.

“The reality is that there is not a good national data – or even a regional, state or local data on officer-involved shootings,” Laurie Robinson, a professor of criminology at George Mason University and co-chair of Barack Obama’s task force on community policing, told the Guardian.
Report: Hundreds of police killings not reported to FBI - CBS News

How Many Americans Do the Cops Kill Each Year?
Quote:

The FBI’s annual crime report does keep track of homicides reported by police as justified killings by police. As defined by the FBI, “justifiable homicide by law enforcement” means “the killing of a felon by a peace officer in the line of duty.” From 2000 to 2014, the FBI reported an average of 390 justifiable homicides by police each year, with a very slight (but erratic) upward trend.

The obvious question was, how many unjustifiable killings were committed by law enforcement? There is no report for that at all: unjustified homicides by police would, in theory, be recorded as generic murders.

Moreover, because police departments themselves decide what is justifiable, there’s plenty of room for doubt about whether all those homicides really were justified — or whether police actually reported all of their killings.

So from 2003 to 2009, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) tried to track police killings more systematically, using data (once again, voluntarily reported by police) on “arrest-related deaths: homicides by law enforcement.”

So IF LE try and claim the deaths caused by LE Officers is falling.. It's obvious it cannot be quantified since most LE Departments DO not report every case and it's self-decided which killings are appropriate. The advent of Video replay by citizen's have exposed the negligence by LE .. While many are great Officer's.. Their reputation is tarnished for NOT standing up for those wrongfully murdered by a rogue COP!!

Waiting to hear the details.

Could be a race crime.
A male Somalian police officer shoots a white woman.
Never know.

Interesting if it would of been a person of color shot Racism would be all over it.

I don't know this woman. She looks and sounds like a nice person. But it seems like everyone here made the mistake of determining her character from looking at her picture.

We really do need to wait for whatever twisted facts the mainstream media chooses to dole out and whatever else we can ferret out before making informed decisions. The boyz in the newsrooms will spin it for us and then we'll know how we're supposed to feel about it.

There are a couple of comments I'd like to make, though.

One, with the baby boomers reaching retirement age we are going to see a large portion of experienced law enforcement people leaving and newer, less experienced people taking their place. Maybe that will encourage a new kind of law enforcement like what we hear talked about.

Let's hope also it doesn't increase the risk of error in situations that require calm and quick thinking. There are some great guys who nonetheless shouldn't be police because they aren't able to remain calm during a crisis. Some of that can be learned but much is a facet of personality type. Kind and gentle people don't fare well in this kind of work. They tend to panic. And also burn out.

Two, please have a glance at this page of the world's nations ranked by intentional homicide.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._homicide_rate

It's a social tragedy that the States should have violence at all considering we like to think of ourselves as civilized people. But we are only slightly more dangerous than Australia and quite comfortably more safe than many other countries in the world. I'm okay with boosting continuing safety but I think it's important to keep our status in perspective.

We will always have accidental deaths - manslaughter, and homicidal people among us. And good citizens as well as dangerous citizens will be victims alike. Any loss of life is a loss of human potential to us all. Perhaps if we could stop politicizing these deaths we could all be more realistic in our viewpoint.

I think it is realistic to expect an officer not to shoot an unarmed woman who called them for assistance. Not asking too much. Has anyone else wondered why the officer closest to her on the driver's side did not feel threatened and did not pull out his gun? It is a valid question.

Well, of course, that is the first thing that confused me when I heard the story this morning. Also that he shot her through the driver side door! Why was the gun drawn? It almost sounds like an accident. Clearly police vehicles need to be reinforced that a bullet cannot penetrate from inside the vehicle

Here is one fact/trend from the article. Only about half as many police are murdered today as happened in the 1970's. It was backed up with factual data.

Will you at least agree there could be a temporary chilling effect on some citizens that may not call the police for assistance after this incident?
No. No reasonable person would think this would happen to them.

What the hell is wrong with cops in Minnesota? Seriously! Philando Castile, the dogs in north Minneapolis, Justine Demond.. it is ridiculous.

Look, I support the police when they are in the right but too many cops out there take their badge and uniform as a pass to be violent sadists and that crap needs to be nipped in the bud.

Agree! Some people unfortunately won't be concerned or think an officer is guilty of any wrongdoing until they lose someone in their family or a close friend, sadly.
