My wife is a special education teacher and desires to teach in either St. Paul Public Schools or Minneapolis Pubic Schools, if we decide to move there. How competitive are teaching jobs in MSP? Thanks!

I'll let others chime in that are actually teachers, but I think the inner cities are in need of teachers. I say this because my friend is in a new program designed to take people in the corporate world with a degree and looking to change careers, and make them teachers in 13 months. And it actually pays them to do so!!! The catch is that you need to work in that city for at least 3 years thereafter. But I assume they wouldn't have such a program if they weren't in need of teachers in general.

This is purely anecdotal, but I've always heard that there is a always need for special ed teachers. Minneapolis and St. Paul districts are having some enrollment issues, so I might consider suburban districts too. My cousin is in special ed, but she is in a small town west of the cities.

I would seriously dig deep on how these districts handle special education and what kind of system she wants to work in. We do not have a system-wide perspective, but really were quite let down by how Minneapolis worked with our child and family. It was light years worse than where we lived previously and school staff did not seem to have much support, professional development, or capacity. Again - a narrow perspective and she might be a game changer wherever she lands or find a school with a healthy special ed culture. But I'd dig deep.
