You could also get to Grand Avenue very easily from Cathedral Hill which is chock full of shops and restaurants, both chain and individually owned ones. Check out some of the side streets around there and you may find some gems too.
We're coming in July for 8 days. Should be a good time to escape the AZ heat I just want to make sure that the house we found as a short-term rental is in a decent area with some good restaurants and stuff... looks like it'll be great!

Cathedral Hill is very nice. It's a very old, established neighborhood that has escaped attempts to modernize it so it still has the historic charm of all the old buildings. It's very safe. I used to walk around in the neighborhood after dark all the time and didn't feel unsafe. Depending on where live or are staying, there are also really nice views of the Capitol, downtown and, of course, the cathedral.

There are a lot of good restaurants on Selby. Il Vino Vesco, which used to be The Vintage, is good and has a nice patio. The atmosphere of W.A. Frost is really nice, particularly the patio, but the food is meh and the service is s-l-o-w. La Grolla is a really nice Italian restaurant on Selby with a very romantic atmosphere if that's what you're going for. Moscow on the Hill is also fun, less for the mediocre food than for the 230 different types of vodka that they carry. Fabulous Fern's on Selby has bar food that's nothing to write home about, but does have a great Sunday brunch that's too die for.
