There is no doubt that most major cities have bad things happen downtown on occasion.

However, look at the difference in response:

Indy:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wth...-obvious%3famp

Minneapolis: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.fox...e-staffing.amp

That is why shootings are common enough in downtown Minneapolis that they usually aren't even major news stories. The robberies that take place on a daily business are invisible unless you look at police reports or crime maps.

Absolute Bull Schitt.

It's obvious that the city council isn't doing much. I mentioned it before. I'm saying that Mpls is alone in Downtown violence.

Most people on the Clowncil hate cops. You have Gordon that wants to put the cops under more of the Clowncil's control so that he can neuterize them. You have Cunningham and Ellison who are also anti-cop. Cano has kept a very low profile (smartly so) in her second term but she is also probably more anti cop that pro. Fletcher never comes out and supports the cops--always leads with junk like "greater community involvement" blah, blah, blah. And much of downtown, including North Loop where I live is in his ward.

For as thin-skinned as she is when it comes to criticism, Goodman is one of the few Clowncil members who has actually come out and called for more cops that Frey has asked for. I would bet a few other, perhaps Palmesano also have some common sense.

Are things that bad now?

I lived in the Warehouse District (N. 4th Ave) for a couple years in 2010 and also the Elliot Park area around 2012, which was arguably a 'worse' neighborhood (10th & Park) and never had issues in either location. I avoided North Minneapolis, and strategically areas of 1st and 2nd ave after bar closing and areas of Elliot Park heading towards Uptown at night.

The rest of the time I pretty much biked or walked anywhere in the city without incident. Have things gone downhill that badly? I always thought of Minneapolis (I grew up in the suburbs) as relatively safe and incredibly clean compared to other cities.

Statistically all of the areas you mention are safer now than they were in 2010.

Have you found some neighborhood crime stats? I know MPD used to do a pretty thorough job of detailing the types and locations of crimes across the city, but I don’t know where to find that kind of detail anymore.

One of the things I have found frustrating about this thread is the lack of any good statistical data on current and past crimes by neighborhood, so any links or sources you could share would be much appreciated.

I figured you would say this. I’d have to find time to research this and pull the data together. When I looked last week I was running into similar issues as the crime data I found on the city website was far more limited than what I was able to access in the past. I’m sure it’s available but it looks like it would require more digging.

Since I hadn’t looked in a while, I decided to revisit the city’s website to see what they were doing on crime stats. While they don’t have the drill down to the neighborhood level that they used to, they publish some pretty good data city wide and by precinct. There are also crime maps by ward, but I haven’t looked at those.

Here is a link to the main page.

Crime Maps & Dashboards - City of Minneapolis

Using the First Precinct as a proxy for downtown, I was able to get some historical data from this page.

https://tableau.minneapolismn.gov/vi...showVizHome=no

In comparing the first 39 weeks of each of the last five years, it seems that violent crime downtown is up over last year and 2016, but below the five year high in 2017.

At some point, I may try to spend a little more time on this and see if there is anything of note.

Oh, one other thing I noticed. There is a “shots fired” map that does show incidents by neighborhood. I still prefer the old system but maybe I will come to find this more helpful.

My personal interest is really on crime in my neighborhood, but since the topic of the thread is downtown I thought I would try to look at that.

In the 80's I would routinely park my car at the pay parking lot for the Greyhound station right there. Would go to the First Avenue for music, coming out late at night. Sometimes the Orpheum also, all those right in that area. Never felt it was a shady area back then. Shootings usually only happened on the north side, or south side near downtown.

I would also walk down Lake street by myself at night, never had a problem. But I am a big guy (6'5") and was usually armed if I wasnt going to a club/bar.
