Really appreciate, if anyone knows of a lower priced place to buy plants, trees, flowers, even landscaping supplies (like bricks for retaining wall)? Stores we see in our area (Menards, Home Depot, Bachman nursery) have exorbitantly priced Trees, plants, .... prices we are finding difficult to lay our hands upon.

We are new to the area and trying to survive. Previously, lived in south, and there used to be always some exception to these big prices, gems to be found (not well known), sometimes a nursery managed by an organization, sometimes city itself, sometimes just a gift from God, that we found, selling nursery / landscape items for very affordable prices. Lots of good wishes to you all, and appreciate leads/tips, peace.

This is a good one that a few people I know have used in the Twin Cities:

Prices are moderate for higher quality trees.

At the very end of the year nurseries will have close out prices, sometimes up to 50%. But you have to wait until September, towards the end. Of course what may be left is maybe not as desirable but with TLC they usually do fine. Actually September is a good time to plant new trees and shrubs.

I did this one year. I got $800 worth of landscaping plants for $400.

Also, have a plan. Maybe don't do everything all at once.

Thanks. I tried them, but they seemed a bit pricier than HomeDepot. It does not make sense that only a one plant tree would cost 200, when we have so much land. These are hard times I guess for everyone.

Yes, that is a good idea, thanks. But then I worry about all money being lost if plants die, as we do not understand snow well for now.

Really plants trees, should require a budget of 100 for any home, and not thousands as it does currently. Something is terribly wrong.

Oak trees seemingly produced a heavy crop of acorns this summer in my neighborhood. Each spring and summer, I am pulling up baby oak seedlings that germinated from the prior fall's acorn drop. If you want some cheap oak trees, collect acorns and plant them this fall. Free but for the labor.

In southeast Nebraska yesterday I saw a Home Depot with a new 'fall shipment' of pretty much everything. Only glanced at the prices on a couple of shrubs, but they didn't seem out of line.

There are some active 'plant swap' and 'perennial exchange' groups that exist on social media sites like FB. If you are on that platform, search "Twin Cities Perennial Exchange" or similar and request to be added to the group. Often times you'll find people wanting to trade plants, but there will also be plenty of opportunities to pick up free plants from people that are thinning out their garden beds.

And if that doesn't work, there are a few other options for discount plants that happen annually. The Friends School Plant Sale is one good local option, there are other plant sale fundraisers that typically happen during the growing season as well. Google "Twin Cities native plant sale" and a list will come up-- often these sales will have smaller plants that cost significantly less than what you will find at nurseries and even big box stores.
