I’ve read a ton of threads here that compare Minnetonka to other cities. I am wondering if anyone has more info into what the Minnetonka neighborhoods feel like. I am planning to move there, have a 500k budget for a home, and have a young child who will be in elementary soon. Anyone have advice on a good neighborhood within Minnetonka for raising a kid? Looking for any info on the vibes in the various sections of Minnetonka - north west East south whatever. What’s desirable? What’s best to avoid if possible? Thank you!

A lot of Minnetonka feels like you’re living in the woods. Pretty much the whole area would be considered desirable. Some areas are older, more established areas. Some with newer McMansions. So I guess it depends on what you’re looking for. The city lies in a few different school districts. Parks and trails are a good asset. Are you moving from out of the area?

Where will you be working? That would help give advice on where to live.

Be aware of school district boundaries if a particular district is of interest to you. The west side of the city is in the Minnetonka school district while the east side is in Hopkins. A small part of the south is in Eden Prairie. Always check the address with the school district as real estate agents can make mistakes on this.

The city is in a phase where some of the neighborhoods are aging with very few children. Overall, the city is hilly and wooded. It’s a very pleasant place and I enjoyed living there.

I live near Apple Valley now. Haven’t spent a ton of time minnetonka but partner has been working in Chan for 8 months and loves it. I’d like to get a job closer to the area, too. I am not looking for a new development type house. I like older character. Semi private/lots with trees. I am thinking of trying for the area south of the groveland elementary school. I am totally open to advice, if you know the area. It just came up as a good school in the district.

Look at the area bounded by Highway 7 to the north, Highway 62 to the south, I-494 to the east, and Hwy 101 to the West. You will find this entire area desirable given your preferences and it is super convenient to Chanhassen and Eden Prairie.

The Minnetonka/ Hopkins/ Eden Prairie school district boundaries run through this area. It’s a very nice area— I lived in this area for 20 years. Since schools seems important to you, just be aware of the boundaries.

I have no strong preference for any particular area of the city. Your budget is fine. If you want space, the defining feature of the city is large lots. A half acre is typical for a single family house. Multiple school districts serve the city as noted. The northern side is part of Wayzata, western side is Minnetonka and central/eastern areas are Hopkins. Some have a preference, but all are good quality schools.

Minnetonka is very nice. It developed before Plymouth and Eden Prairie. Most of the houses were built from the 50s to early 90s. As Glenfield etc noted, Minnetonka has very nice wooded neighborhoods. Really, it depends on what type of houses you prefer, newer or older style homes. If you like newer houses, then Eden Prairie and Plymouth would make more sense for you.
