Ilhan Omar is unfit for office (daycare, tax return, legal)

Ilhan Omar announces today that, despite previous denials that they were romantically linked, she has married her political consultant, Tim Mynett.

Omar’s romantic life is of little interest to me, but the legal and ethical challenges posed by her marriages has a direct bearing on her fitness to serve as representative for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District. The Washington Post reported that Omar’s campaign paid Mynett’s political consulting firm more than $220,000 in 2018 and 2019.

It was alleged in a complaint filed with the FEC that expenses related to Mynett’s firm were not properly disclosed and were used to fund personal travel expenses for the couple’s romantic getaways.

This is not the first time Omar has run afoul of campaign finance laws. The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board found that she she improperly used campaign money to fund travel unrelated to her campaign and to prepare personal tax returns. The amended tax returns were filed in response to the disclosure that she has filed joint tax returns with the father of her children despite the fact that they were not legally married.

This was not Omar’s first ethics violation. As a state representative, she was forced to return $2,500 in speaking fees she improperly accepted.

Ilhan Omar seems to believe that ethics laws and rules do not apply to her. She is unfit to hold office and, while she won’t, she should resign. It’s a shame that the voters of MNCD5 chose her to represent us when they had the choice of other more experienced and certainly more ethical Democrats. Let’s hope that they reject identity politics and vote Omar out of office this year.

The way we “complain” is at the ballot box. The purpose of this thread is to inform the portion of the electorate which visits City-Data, as her problems have largely been ignored by the local media. Since Omar’s district is in the Twin Cities, the topic is local in nature. Past threads have been closed as they focused on a specific wrong doing. Since the topic of this thread is her unfitness to serve in Congress, it should enjoy a long life.

Those who are not interested can occupy themselves in another way.

Aside from the indiscretions of her political and campaign finance practices, I am far more disturbed by her practice of immigration fraud. It is a common practice among the Muslim immigrants and sadly we do nothing about it. Daycare anyone?

The State Dept implemented DNA testing in 2008 in response to widespread fraud among immigrants from Africa falsely claiming family ties.

I couldn’t care less about Ilhan Omar’s instagram account nor about her getting married. I care far more that the Dow Jones lost 2300 points yesterday. I care far more about the possibility that my family will need to cancel upcoming travel plans.
