Following the topics here and knowing what you’re talking about is not at all necessary if you just want to drive by and take pot shots at people.

I will also say the CMs say that the reason for private security is that the MPD officers are needed in the community. Given that the plan approved by the council calls for a reorganization of the police dept., and a reassignment of some of its responsibilities rather than an elimination of the police force, I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one.

I have no idea whether they actually need security and I do not support their plan but, while the appearances of hiring private security are bad, I do not think it is a significant issue.

I saw that. Just an absolute joke. The strongest proponents of DEFUNDING THE POLICE NOW NEED THE POLICE. Moreover THEY ARE COSTING TAXPAYERS $4500! Mind blowing.

Actually, I think you are completely missing the point. The big point. The politicians you are talking about (I assume, because it seems pretty obvious--but I am not from Minneapolis) are claiming that their position in the Gov't has made them a "target" by certain unsavory elements bent on violence and other bad things.

Is that how local politics is supposed to work? No, I think people expect not to be harmed by getting elected to the city council or whatever. I don't think it is going too far out on a limb to say that these protests coinciding with Covid, and all, has created a rather unique situation is places like Lansing and Minneapolis. That is why I said private security would be the cheaper option. Should taxpayers pay? Yes, I think they should, assuming there is actually now a real threat in Minneapolis--targeting local politicians. Are you saying the politico's are just making up a threat so they can get free security? Are you saying things are so bad that everybody in Minneapolis need added security?

Where I live there have been some pretty rowdy protests and vandalism and some violence by the protesters and by the police. As far as I know the local politicians do not have security in the past, and have not felt the need for any security now.

Along the same lines, many businesses downtown (near the protests) have boarded up their businesses to protect the windows, etc. Not sure if their insurance is paying or if the business owner is paying for the plywood, etc. As far as I know, nobody near me has boarded up windows to their houses near the protests.

As to cost, I would not believe a "city spokesperson" on that topic one bit. In fact, with that biased uber partisan city management structure and known history, I call BS on that.

It would depend on the size of the security detail, but $4,500 a day for 3 people? That should be coming out of their own pockets.

I am actually even doubting this private tax payer funded security is legal to be honest.

24 hour security (assuming 24 hours). $62.50 x 24 hours = $1500 for 1 person x 3 = $4500

$62.50 for 1 security officer per hour isn't out of the question....

Could be $100 per hour but less than 24 hours per day.

$4500 per day for security for 3 people sounds about right.

Not saying it's right or wrong...just pointing out approximate math.

Thank you NY Post for providing its readers with low brow news causing outrage about our city to a group of readers whom in many cases probably couldn’t point it out on a map.

Carry on.

Storm the castle!

Gently escort them to their new summer office in Prospect Park where they will lovingly be watched over by the neighborhood.

Times are changing. Keep up, City Leaders. Police are so yesterday.

Oh, and same lunch for everyone, please. If they can adapt to what they created I see no reason to bring out the guillotines yet.

Of course numerous domestic media and even the BBC have reported that the council members receiving private security at the taxpayers' expense are Cano, Jenkins and Cunningham. And of course, the Star Tribune has been silent on this the entire time.

I haven’t been following closely so I must have missed your posts calling out the NYT and WashPost for reporting about Minneapolis’ problems.

The city should really be supplying them with unarmed social workers for security. I love how they do not want police, but now are resorting a private version of them. If it ever makes it to a city vote, would the vote be before or after or same time as city council vote in 2021? They should make city police vote before, then when it gets denied, the members will get voted out after. Take notice of these dates...
