Love it in and around Boston and New England since arriving for college, but when I retire on a limited Income, maybe a nice college town like Northfield would be ideal.

Is that considered far enough from the Twin Cities but still close enough to extended family and even commuting -- for those hoping to get away from the immediate Twin Cities?

Never checked it out on my lone adult return to Minnesota for one week in 1999 but have reserched it here a bit.

It seems well less than an hour from downtown Minneapolis without traffic. Is it too remote in Minnesota terms, as maybe no buses to get around locally for seniors?

In my research, maybe Hastings and Red Wing along with Northfield should also be on my list. Haven't been but they also seem to be nice towns. As long as I'm within 60 miles of MSP for occasional culture and cuisine -- that's all I need.
Northfield is delightful. If I were looking to move within MN and had the option to telecommute, Northfield would be one of my top picks, personally. It has a vibrant downtown, easy access to the river, immaculately kept homes, and pretty country scenery surrounding it. Cool history with the famously foiled bank robbery that the whole town seems proud of as well. I highly recommend a visit.

Northfield is a delightful town for sure. Just realize the housing market is about 15% or more higher than surrounding areas...and their property taxes are very high due to putting up a new school soon. Talked to someone who lives there about 6 months ago and their property taxes went from $4000 to $5000. While that may not be a bit deal to some...it's something to consider. The town itself is very nice.
