How big of a deal was deer season in suburban MSP in the 80s and 90s? (transplants)

I have a friend now lives in LA, but grew up in the Twin Cities suburbs (of South Asian descent).

I was rather surprised when he said that the first day of deer season was practically a holiday when he was in school then.

This came as quite a surprise. I mean blue collared urban Midwesterners certainly have dabbled in hunting even in Chicagoland, but I was really surprised to hear him say this, considering the Twin Cities is the third largest metro area in the Midwest

Is this any of your experience? How big of a thing was deer season in the MSP suburbs. Did people actually head out of town as soon as the season opened?

If so, is it because many of the transplants to MSP came from rural areas and small towns across the Upper Midwest?

I was surprised to hear him say this, and wonder if people made a big deal of the opening of deer season.

Yes. There are still plenty of deer hunters that are from the suburban areas. Maybe not as many 30 years ago. You can it's deer opening when the highways out of town fill up... fishing opener too.
